Author(s) | Galindo, Alberto;Pascual, Pedro |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990. |
Description | XVI, 417 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The first edition of this book was published in 1978 and a new Spanish e(,tition in 1989. When the first edition appeared, Professor A. Martin suggested that an English translation would meet with interest. Together with Professor A. S. Wightman, he tried to convince an American publisher to translate the book. Financial problems made this impossible. Later on, Professors E. H. Lieband W. Thirring proposed to entrust Springer-Verlag with the translation of our book, and Professor W. BeiglbOck accepted the plan. We are deeply grateful to all of them, since without their interest and enthusiasm this book would not have been translated. In the twelve years that have passed since the first edition was published, beautiful experiments confirming some of the basic principles of quantum me?? chanics have been carried out, and the theory has been enriched with new, im?? portant developments. Due reference to all of this has been paid in this English edition, which implies that modifications have been made to several parts of the book. Instances of these modifications are, on the one hand, the neutron interfer?? ometry experiments on wave-particle duality and the 27r rotation for fermions, and the crucial experiments of Aspect et al. with laser technology on Bell's inequalities, and, on the other hand, some recent results on level ordering in central potentials, new techniques in the analysis of anharmonic oscillators, and perturbative expansions for the Stark and Zeeman effects |

Title | Self-Trapped Excitons |
Author(s) | Song, K.S;Williams, Richard T |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993. |
Description | XII, 404 p. 2 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In crystals as diverse as sodium chloride, silicon dioxide, sold xenon, pyrene, arsenic triselenide, and silver chloride, the fundamental electronicexcitation (exciton) is localized within its own lattice distortion field very shortly after its creation. This book discusses the structure if the self-trapped exciton (STE) and its evolution along the path of its return to the ground state or to a defect state of crytal. A comprehensive review of experiments on STEs in a wide range of materials has been assembled, including extensive tables of data. Throughout, emphasisis given to the basic physics underlying various manifestations of self-trapping. The role of the spontaneous symmetry-breaking or "off-center"relaxation in STE structure is examined thoroughly, and leads naturally to the subject of lattice defect formation as a product of STE relaxation. The theory of STEs is developed from a localized, atomistic perspective using self-consistent methods adapted from the theory of defects in solids. At this time of rapid progress in STEs, researchers will welcome the first monograph dedicaded solely to this topic |

Title | Helium Atom Scattering from Surfaces |
Author(s) | Hulpke, E |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992. |
Description | XIV, 324 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | High resolution helium atom scattering can be applied to study a number of interesting properties of solid surfaces with great sensitivity and accuracy. This book treats in detail experimental and theoretical aspects ofthis method as well as all current applications in surface science. The individual chapters - all written by experts in the field - are devoted to the investigation of surface structure, defect shapes and concentrations, the interaction potential, collective and localized surface vibrations at low energies, phase transitions and surface diffusion. Over the past decade helium atom scattering has gained widespread recognitionwithin the surface science community. Points in its favour are comprehensiveunderstanding of the scattering theory and the availability of well-tested approximation to the rigorous theory. This book will be invaluable to surface scientists wishing to make an informed judgement on the actual and potential capabilities of this technique and its results |

Title | Desorption Induced by Electronic Transitions DIET V : Proceedings of the Fifth International Workshop, Taos, NM, USA, April 1???4, 1992 |
Author(s) | Burns, Alan R;Stechel, Ellen B;Jennison, Dwight R |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993. |
Description | XII, 348 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume in the Springer Series on Surface Sciences presents a recent account of advances in the ever-broadening field of electron-and photon-stimulated sur?? face processes. As in previous volumes, these advances are presented as the proceedings of the International Workshop on Desorption Induced by Electronic Transitions; the fifth workshop (DIET V) was held in Taos, New Mexico, April 1-4, 1992. It will be abundantly clear to the reader that "DIET" is not restricted to desorption, but has for several years included photochemistry, non-thermal surface modification, exciton self-trapping, and many other phenomena that are induced by electron or photon bombardment. However, most stimulated surface processes do share a common physics: initial electronic excitation, localization of the excitation, and conversion of electronic energy into nuclear kinetic energy. It is the rich variation of this theme which makes the field so interesting and fruitful. We have divided the book into eleven parts in order to emphasize the wide range of materials that are examined and to highlight recent experimental and theoretical advances. Naturally, there is considerable overlap between sections, and many papers would be appropriate in more than one part. Part I focuses on perhaps the most active area in the field today: electron attachment. Here the detection and characterization of negative ions formed by attachment of elec?? trons supplied externally from the vacuum are discussed. In addition, the first observations of negative ions formed by substrate photoelectrons are presented |

Title | Physics of Amphiphilic Layers : Proceedings of the Workshop, Les Houches, France February 10???19, 1987 |
Author(s) | Meunier, Jacques;Langevin, Dominique;Boccara, Nino |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987. |
Description | XI, 399 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Amphiphilic layers play essential roles in the behaviour of a great variety of disperse systems such as micelles, microemulsions and vesicles. They can also exist as isolated mono- or bilayers, or constitute extended liquid crystalline structures. Although the properties of these different systems may at first sight seem unrelated, theoretical interpretations of them depend on several common concepts. This was the reason for bringing together scientists working in this area for the International Winter School on the Physics of Amphiphilic Layers, which was held at Les Houches, 10-18 February, 1987. The topics treated in the proceedings volume are mono- and bilayers, interactive forces between layers (with special emphasis on steric forces), ordered structures (in particular swollen lamellar phases and defects), vesicles, micelles (including polymer-like systems), microemulsions (especially random bicontinuous structures) and porous media. The importance of thermal fluctuations in the amphiphilic layers is stressed. Recent results are presented and literature references allow readers not familiar with the subject to find any background information they require |

Author(s) | Dervieux, Alain;Larrouturou, Bernard |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989. |
Description | VII, 483 p. 142 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Interest in numerical combustion is growing among applied mathematicians, physicists, chemists, engine manufacturers and many industrialists.
