Abstract Note | The first part of this collection sets out the results of some experimental and theoretical investigations into the optical properties of nontransition metals. The extensive future pros?? pects of metal optics are indicated; the use of metal optics enables a whole series of import?? ant electron properties of metals to be determined. Results obtained by studying intermolecular forces (the hydrogen bond and van der Waals forces) using spectroscopic methods (Raman effect and infrared absorption) are presented in the second part. A method of studying the true absorption of the drop phase of a water cloud is described. Methods of increasing the dispersion of manufactured spectral instruments and constructing various infrared spectrometers are indicated. The publication is intended for scientific workers, graduates, and students concerned with problems of metal optics, the electron properties of metals, and molecular spectroscopy. v CONTENTS OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF NONTRANSITION METALS G. Title | Introduction to Integrated Optics |
Author(s) | Barnoski, Michael |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1974. |
Description | XV, 515 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The material presented in this volume is based on a series of lectures presented at an annual short course entitled "Integrated Optics" sponsored by the University of Cali?? fornia, Santa Barbara, in March of 1973. Each chapter has been authored by the individual lecturing on the particular subject matter con?? tained in that chapter. The primary intent of this book is to pro?? vide the students with a written version of the lecture material. The text treats a large variety of the basic structures and analysis techniques currently being employed in the rapidly growing area of technology termed "Integrated Optics." The volume contains both material that has previously been published in scientific journals and material which has not been published elsewhere. Since the field of integrated optics is in a stage of rapid expansion, a complete coverage of all the experimental results is difficult. As a result the emphasis is placed on the funda?? mental theoretical ideas and experimental results. The editor gratefully acknowledges the con?? tributing authors and the institutions with which they are associated for their wholehearted cooperation in the preparation of this book. Particular thanks are extended to the Hughes Research Laboratories, a division of the Hughes Aircraft Company |

Title | Applications of Photonic Technology |
Author(s) | Chrostowski, J;Lampropoulos, G.A;Measures, R.M |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1995. |
Description | XIV, 566 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this book we present a snapshot of the state of the art in photonics in 1994, showing typical applications and emerging new ones; discussing the key technologies behind these applications, their limitations, and prospects. The articles in this book are extended versions of the papers presented at the first International Conference on Applications ofPhotonic Technology (ICAPT'94), held in Toronto, Canada, on June 21-23, 1994. Photonics has been recognized as one of the key technologies for the 21 st century, as electronics was the technology of the 20th centrury and electrical engineering changed the life of people in the 19th century. According to the recent report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris (OECD), the market for photonics will grow dramatically in the next 10 years with an expected world-wide expenditure of US $230 billion from some US $30 billion in 1992. The explosion of information technology was the largest driving force for the deployment of photonic technology. It created insatiable demand for ever-higher data transmission and processing rates, which cannot be sustained by electronics alone. Boosted by the enonnous investment of the telecommunications and defense industries, the demand for photonics (or optoelectronics) is steadily increasing. It is solidly established in the long?? haul communications, laser printers and CD-ROMs |

Title | Optics and Lasers : Including Fibers and Integrated Optics |
Author(s) | Young, M |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1984. |
Description | XIX, 273 p. 19 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Since this book was first published in 1977, the major advances in optics have been the maturing of optical communications and the development of in?? tegrated optics. When I was offered the opportunity to prepare a revised edi?? tion, I decided to add chapters on these disciplines to the original work. This book, which was begun long before I joined the National Bureau of Stand?? ards, remains a private venture, written, so to speak, in my basement; there is no official connection with the National Bureau of Standards. I have also taken the opportunity to make some corrections and to add several short sections within the body of the earlier text. The most important of these changes include a discussion of group velocity, phase velocity and group index of refraction to anticipate the need for these concepts in Chap. 9; revision of the section on coherent-optical processing, including what is essen?? tially an optical derivation of the Fourier series; addition of the converging?? beam optical processor; and addition of a section on laser safety. The bulk of the new material comprises three chapters. The first is Chap. 9, "Optical Waveguides". In this chapter, I develop optical waveguide theory primarily on the basis of ray optics and interference in planar waveguides |

Title | New Directions in Atomic Physics |
Author(s) | Whelan, C.T;Dreizler, Reiner M;Macek, J.H;Walters, H.R.J |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1999. |
Description | X, 373 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The last few years have seen some remarkable advances in the understanding of atomic phenomena. It is now possible to isolate atomic systems in traps, measure in coincidence the fragments of collision processes, routinely produce, and study multicharged ions. One can look at bulk matter in such a way that the fundamental atomic character is clearly evident and work has begun to tease out the properties of anti?? matter. The papers in this book reflect many aspects of modem Atomic Physics. They correspond to the invited talks at a conference dedicated to the study of "New Directions in Atomic Physics," which took place in Magdalene College, Cambridge in July of 1998. The meeting was designed as a way of taking stock of what has been achieved and, it was hoped, as a means of stimulating new research in new areas, along new lines. Consequently, an effort was made to touch on as many directions as we could in the four days of the meeting. We included some talks which overviewed whole subfields, as well as quite a large number of research contributions. There is a unity to Physics and we tried to avoid any artificial division between theory and experiment. We had roughly the same number of talks from those who are primarily concerned with making measurements, and from those who spend their lives trying to develop the theory to describe the experiments |

Title | Ultrafast Processes in Spectroscopy |
Author(s) | Svelto, Orazio;De Silvestri, S;Denardo, G |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1996. |
Description | XVIII, 668 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume is a collection of papers presented at the Ninth International Symposium on "Ultrafast Processes in Spectroscopy" (UPS '95) held at the International Centre for Theo?? retical Physics (ICTP), Trieste (Italy), October 30 -November 3, 1995. These meetings have become recognized as the major forum in Europe for discussion of new work in this rapidly moving field. The UPS'95 Conference in Trieste brought together a multidisciplinary group of researchers sharing common interests in the generation of ultrashort optical pulses and their application to studies of ultrafast phenomena in physics, chemistry, material science, electronics, and biology. It was attended by approximately 250 participants from 20 countries and the five-day program comprises more than 200 papers. The progress of both technology and applications in the field of ultrafast processes during these last years is truly remarkable. The advent of all solid state femtosecond lasers and the extension of laser wavelengths by frequency conversion techniques provide a large variety of high-performance light sources for ultrashort pulses. With these sources ultrafast phenomena in physical, chemical and biological systems and in electronic de?? vi(:es are now studied extensively. Ultrafast technology is becoming one of the basic and common tools presently entering a wide variety of scientific fields not only for basic re?? search but also for promoting new applications in various areas. We feel that these pro?? ceedings vividly reflect the present status of the field |

Title | Intersubband Transitions in Quantum Wells |
Author(s) | Rosencher, Emmanuel;Vinter, Borge;Levine, Barry F |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1992. |
Description | IX, 345 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book contains the lectures delivered at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the "Intersubband Transistions in Quantum Wells" held in Cargese, France, between the t 9 h and the 14th of September 1991. The urge for this Workshop was justified by the impressive growth of work dealing with this subject during the last two or three years. Indeed, thanks to recent progresses of epitaxial growth techniques, such as Molecular Beam Epitaxy, it is now possible to realize semiconductor layers ( e.g. GaAs) with thicknesses controlled within one atomic layer, sandwiched between insulating layers (e.g. AlGaAs). When the semiconducting layer is very thin, i.e. less than 15 nm, the energy of the carriers corresponding to their motion perpendicular to these layers is quantized, forming subbands of allowed energies. Because of the low effective masses in these semiconducting materials, the oscillator strengths corresponding to intersubband transitions are extremely large and quantum optical effects become giant in the 5 - 20 ~ range: photoionization, optical nonlinearities, ... Moreover, a great theoretical surprise is that - thanks to the robustness of the effective mass theory - these quantum wells are a real life materialization of our old text book one-dimensional quantum well ideal. Complex physical phenomena may then be investigated on a simple model system |

Title | Acoustical Imaging |
Author(s) | Ermert, Helmut;Harjes, Hans-Peter |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1992. |
Description | XIX, 986 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book constitutes the proceedings of the 19th International Symposium on Acoustical Imaging at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany during April 3 -5, 1991. It was the first time that the symposium was held in Europe after major political changes happened in that area. The freedom to travel for all people from eastern European countries was an obvious reason for the great numbers of sub?? mitted abstracts and for numerous conference participants. 193 of 239 submitted contributions from 29 countries were accepted for presentation by authors from USA (13%), Canada (2%), Japan (7%), Peoples Republic of China (7%), United Kingdom (4%), France (7%), Italy (3%), Poland (4%), Soviet Union (7%), Germany (28%) and other countries (18%). 283 scientists from 29 countries attended the conference representing the interdisciplinary field between mathematics, physics, engineering and medicine. 151 papers were available for publication in this proceedings covering the topics 1. Mathematics and Physics of Acoustical Imaging 2. Components and Systems 3. Applications in Medicine and Biology 4. Applications in Nondestructive Testing 5. Remote Sensing Applications 6. Industrial Applications A relative large number of contributions on acoustical microscopy was included in the conference program within topics 3 and 4. Also, papers on "non-traditional" acoustical imaging subjects, e. g. on phonon imaging and on remote sensing in the atmosphere, have broadened the scope of the conference. The success and stimulation of the conference and of the papers presented in this volume is owed, of course to the authors and participants |
