TitleSelf-Trapped Excitons
Author(s)Song, K.S;Williams, Richard T
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993.
DescriptionXII, 404 p. 2 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteIn crystals as diverse as sodium chloride, silicon dioxide, sold xenon, pyrene, arsenic triselenide, and silver chloride, the fundamental electronicexcitation (exciton) is localized within its own lattice distortion field very shortly after its creation. This book discusses the structure if the self-trapped exciton (STE) and its evolution along the path of its return to the ground state or to a defect state of crytal. A comprehensive review of experiments on STEs in a wide range of materials has been assembled, including extensive tables of data. Throughout, emphasisis given to the basic physics underlying various manifestations of self-trapping. The role of the spontaneous symmetry-breaking or "off-center"relaxation in STE structure is examined thoroughly, and leads naturally to the subject of lattice defect formation as a product of STE relaxation. The theory of STEs is developed from a localized, atomistic perspective using self-consistent methods adapted from the theory of defects in solids. At this time of rapid progress in STEs, researchers will welcome the first monograph dedicaded solely to this topic

TitleOptical Solitons in Fibers
Author(s)Hasegawa, Akira
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990.
DescriptionXII, 79 p. 31 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteAlready after six months high demand made a new edition of this textbook necessary. The most recent devel- opments associated with two topical and very important theoretical and practical subjects are combined: Solitons as analytical solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations and as lossless signals in dielectric fibers. The practical implications point towards technological advances allowing for an economic and undistorted propagation of signals revolutionizing telecommunications. Starting from an elementary level readily accessible to undergraduates, this pioneer in the field provides a clear and up-to-date exposition of the prominent aspects of the theoretical background and most recent experimental results in this new and rapidly evolving branch of sci- ence. This well-written book makes not just easy reading for the researcher but also for the interested physicist, mathematician, and engineer. It is well suited for undergraduate or graduate lecture courses

TitleOptics and Lasers : Including Fibers and Optical Waveguides
Author(s)Young, Matt
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1986.
DescriptionXVI, 282 p. 14 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this newest edition of Optics and Lasers, I have added a substantial number of problems and moved most of the older ones to the end of the book. There are now about one hundred problems, which, I hope, will make the book more useful in the classroom. As before, some of the problems derive an espe?? cially important or useful result; these I have left integrated within the body of the book. In such cases, I state the result and, often, give it an equation number and a citation in the index. Teachers who adopt the book may obtain solutions to the problems by asking me for them on letterhead stationery. In addition, I have rewritten over a dozen paragraphs to improve their clarity or precision and, further , corrected minor errors of punctuation and taken care of other such small details. The field of optics has been changing greatly for almost two dozen years. Partly because of the applied or engineering nature of much of modern optics, there has been a need for a practical text that surveys the entire field. Such a book should not be a classical-optics text, but, rather , it should be strong on principles, applications and instrumentation, on lasers, holography and coherent light, and on optical-fiber waveguides. On the other hand, it should concern itself relatively little with such admittedly interesting phenomena as the formation of the rainbow or the precise determination of the speed of light

TitleLasers, Spectroscopy and New Ideas : A Tribute to Arthur L. Schawlow
Author(s)Yen, William M;Levenson, Marc D
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987.
DescriptionXIV, 341 p. 58 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume originated in a happy event honoring Arthur Schawlow on his 65th birthday. As a research physicist, Schawlow has been a major infiuence on the present nature of physics and of high technology. He has also had a role, through the American Physical Society and other organizations, in shaping policy for the world of physicists. Important as these professional activities have been, the contributions to this volume were not prepared just for these reasons, but more for Art Schawlow the friend, colleague, and teacher. I am one who has had the privilege of knowing and collaborating with Art, probably over a longer period of time than others participating in this volume, and in a number of different enterprises; his friendship and stimulating scientific abilities are a very significant part of my own life. It is hence a pleasure to take part in this volume celebrating his contributions to science and to scientists. Schawlow's career has been geographically centered at the University of Toronto, Columbia University, the Bell Telephone Laboratories, and Stan?? ford University. But, as is illustrated by the papers of this volume, its effects and his personal infiuence have diffused widely. In his own work, Art Schawlow is noted for thoughtful imagination, keen physical intuition, and what might be thought an interest in gadgets - not just any gadgets, but beautiful and innovative mechanisms or new techniques in which he charac?? teristically recognizes important potentials

TitlePicosecond Electronics and Optoelectronics : Proceedings of the Topical Meeting Lake Tahoe, Nevada, March 13???15, 1985
Author(s)Mourou, Gerard A;Bloom, David M;Lee, Chi-H
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1985.
DescriptionX, 258 p : online resource
Abstract NoteOver the past decade, we have witnessed a number of spectacular advances in the fabrication of crystalline semiconductor devices due mainly to the pro?? gress of the different techni ques of heteroepitaxy. The di scovery of two?? dimensional behavior of electrons led to the development of a new breed of ultrafast electronic and optical devices, such as modulation doped FETs, permeable base transistors, and double heterojunction transistors. Comparable progress has been made in the domain of cryoelectronics, ultrashort pulse generation, and ultrafast diagnostics. Dye lasers can generate 8 fs signals after compression, diode lasers can be modulated at speeds close to 20 GHz and electrical signals are characterized with subpicosecond accuracy via the electro-optic effect. Presently, we are experiencing an important interplay between the field of optics and electronics; the purpose of this meeting was to foster and enhance the interaction between the two disciplines. It was logical to start the conference by presenting to the two different audiences, i. e. , electronics and optics, the state-of-the-art in the two res?? pective fields and to highlight the importance of optical techniques in the analysis of physical processes and device performances. One of the leading techniques in this area is the electro-optic sampling technique. This optical technique has been used to characterize transmission lines and GaAs devices. Carrier transport in semiconductors is of fundamental importance and some of its important aspects are stressed in these proceedings

PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1980.
DescriptionXI, 626 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Advanced Study Institute on "Theoretical Aspects and New Developments in Magneto-Optics" was held at the University of Antwerpen (R.U.C.A.), from July 16 to July 28, 1979. The Institute was sponsored by NATO. Co-sponsors were: Agfa-Gevaert (Belgium), A.S.L.K. (Belgium), Bell Telephone Mfg. CO. (Belgium), Esso Belgium, Generale Bankmaatschappij (Belgium), General Motors (Belgium), I.B.M. (Belgium), Kredietbank (Belgium), Metallurgie Hoboken-Over?? pelt (Belgium), National Science Foundation (U.S.A). A total of 60 lecturers and participants attended the Institute. Scope of the Institute The magneto-optic phenomena are due to the change of the polarizability of a substance as a result of the splitting of the quantized energy bands. Most of these phenomena were discovered during the second half of this century. The understanding of the magneto-optical effects of all kinds, however, was brought by the advent of quantum mechanics, and since then important progress has been made in many fields of experimental methods and techniques

TitlePhotorefractive Materials and Their Applications II : Survey of Applications
Author(s)G??nter, Peter;Huignard, Jean-Pierre
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989.
DescriptionXVIII, 369 p. 188 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the second of two volumes that review, for the first time, all major aspects of photorefractive effects and their applications. Photorefractive effects in electro-optic crystals are based on optically induced space-charge fields which ultimately alter the refractive indices by the electro-optic Pockels effect. The fundamental phenomena leading to photoinduced changes of refractive index, the materials requirements and experimental results on a variety of photorefractive materials are discussed and the most recent theoretical models describing these phenomena are presented. Interest in photorefractive materials has increased in recent years mainly because of their potential for nonlinear optical devices and for optical signals processing applications. Most of these applications are reviewed in this volume. The contributions to the two volumes are written by experts on each topic and are intended for scientists and engineers active in the field and for researchers and graduate students entering the field. Over 300 references to original papers on photorefractive and associated phenomena are cited. Volume 1 appeared as Volume 61 of Topics in Applied Physics
