On the other hand students coming from the various NATO countries arrived with an inhomogeneous background to absorb the broad spectnUIl of material covered by the lecturers. However, by the end of the two week period of the ASI, that initial difference in scientific background had been reduced substantially . The lecturers had covered subject matters from the most fundamental to the most applied aspects of theoretical and computational organic chemistry. The lectures were argnmented with tutorial sessions and computational laboratory led by a small group of carefnlly selected tutors. Overall, this NATO -ASI was a ~at success and the Editors are hopeful that the present volume will communicate the scientific success and will radiate the intellectual spirit of the meeting

Abstract NoteThe ASI workshop on "Selectivities in Lewis Acid Promoted Reactions" held in the Emmantina-Hotel in Athens-Glyfada, Greece, October 2-7, 1988 was held to bring some light into the darkness of Lewis acid induced processes. As such the workshop reflects some current trends in organic synthesis, where Lewis acids are becoming a powerful tool in many different modern reactions, e.g. Diels-Alder reactions, Ene reactions, Sakurai reactions, and in general silicon and tin chemistry. The objective of this meeting was to bring together most of the world experts in the field to discuss the major reactions promoted by Lewis acids. Organic synthesis will play a major role in this book connected with some fundamental mechanistic work on allylsilane and -tin chemistry. Both natural product synthesis and unnatural molecules are presented in the chapters. The book presents all the 15 invited lectures and the contributions of 15 posters. I am confident that the material presented in this book will stimulate the chemistry, which has been discussed on our meeting, around the world. Abstract NotePrior to the 9th International Conference on Reactivity Solids in Krakow, Poland a group of about 25 international scientists held a special conference entitled "Transport in Nonstoichiometric Compounds" in late Aug. 1980 in Mogilany, Poland (near Krakow). This conference was well received in view of the interaction between the participants, as well as the resulting publication of the proceedings (Elsevier Scientific Publishing Company, 1982, edited by J. Nowotny). At this first conference the participants decided that it would be desirable to organize similar conferences at about two year intervals. Thus, a second meeting was held in late June, early July at Alenya, Pyrenees Orientales, France. This conference had a larger number of participants, about 50, but still managed to promote excellent interaction between all the participants. These proceedings, with editors G. Petot-Ervas, Hj. Matzke and C. Monty, have also been published by Elsevier as a special edition of the journal, Solid State lonics, Vol. 12 (1984). In view of the success of the initial two conferences, a third meeting was organized and held at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA., 16802, U.S.A. from 11 June 84 to 15 June 84. Abstract NoteIonomers, that is polymers containing a low concentration of charged units along the chain, have been the subject of increasing interest during the past twenty years. The presence of ionic groups in the poly?? mer changes some of its properties dramatically. Increases in the modu?? lus and the viscosity of several orders of magnitude have been observed, and changes in the glass transition of hundreds of degrees are possible. In addition, diffusion coefficients can be modified drastically. These changes are due primarily to the presence of reversible ionic cross?? links in these materials. Because of the low dielectric constant of most organic polymers, the ions or ionic dipoles tend to aggregate ; this aggregation process, however, is limited, because the ionic groups are covalently bonded to the organic chain. Abstract NoteThis volume contains papers presented at the IUTAM Symposium on Bubble Dynamics and Interface Phenomena held at the University of Birmingham from 6-9 September 1993. In many respects it follows on a decade later from the very successful IUTAM Symposium held at CALTECH in June 1981 on the Mechanics and physics of bubbles in liquids which was organised by the late Milton Plesset and Leen van Wijngaarden. The intervening period has seen major development with both experiment and theory. On the experimental side there have been ad?? vances with very high speed photography and data recording that provide detailed information on fluid and interface motion. Major developments in both computer hardware and software have also led to extensive improvement in our understand?? ing of bubble and interface dynamics although development is still limited by the sheer complexity of the laminar and turbulent flow regimes often associated with bubbly flows. The symposium attracts wide and extensive interest from engineers, physical, chemical, biological and medical scientists and applied mathematicians. Abstract NoteThis book is based on the results of many years of experimental work by the author and his colleagues, dealing with the electronic properties of organic crystals. E. Silinsh has played a leading role in pOinting out the importance of the polarization energy by an excess carrier, in determining not only the character of the carrier mobility in organic crystals, but in determining the band gap and the nature of the all-important trapping site in these crystals. The one-electron model of electronic conductivity that has been so successful in dealing with inorganic semiconductors is singular?? ly unsuccessful in rationalizing the unusual physical properties of organic crystals. A many-body theory is required, and the experimental manifestation of this is the central role played by the crystal polarization enerqies in transferring the results obtained with the isolated molecule, to the solid. The careful studies of E. Silinsh in this field have shown tn detail how this polarization energy develops around the excess carrier (and also the hole-electron pair) sitting on a molecular site in the crystal. As with all insulators, trapping sites playa dominant role in reducing the magnitude of ~he current that can theoretically pass through the organic crystal. It is usually the case that these trapping sites are energetically distributed within the forbidden band of the crystal. Abstract NoteIn the broad field of supramolecular chemistry, the design and hence the use of chemosensors for ion and molecule recognition have developed at an extroardinary rate. This imaginative and creative area which involves the interface of different disciplines, e.g. organic and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, biology, medicine, environmental science, is not only fundamental in nature. It is also clear that progress is most rewarding for several new sensor applications deriving from the specific signal delivered by the analyte-probe interaction. Indeed, if calcium sensing in real time for biological purposes is actually possible, owing to the emergence of efficient fluorescent receptors, other elements can also be specifically detected, identified and finally titrated using tailored chemosensors. Pollutants such as heavy metals or radionuclides are among the main targets since their detection and removal could be envisioned at very low concentrations with, in addition, sensors displaying specific and strong complexing abilities. Besides, various species of biological interest (or others, the list is large) including sugars and other micellaneous molecules such as oxygen and carbon dioxide can be actually probed with optodes and similar devices. The present volume in which the key lectures of the workshop are collected gives a survey of the main developments in the field.
