Title | Computational Techniques for Fluid Dynamics 2 : Specific Techniques for Different Flow Categories |
Author(s) | Fletcher, Clive A.J |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | XIV, 494 p. 3 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The purpose and organisation of this book are described in the preface to the first edition (1988). In preparing this edition minor changes have been made, par?? ticularly to Chap. 1 (Vol. 1) to keep it reasonably current, and to upgrade the treatment of specific techniques, particularly in Chaps. 12-14 and 16-18. How?? ever, the rest of the book (Vols. 1 and 2) has required only minor modification to clarify the presentation and to modify or replace individual problems to make them more effective. The answers to the problems are available in Solutions Manual jor Computational Techniques jor Fluid Dynamics by K. Srinivas and C. A. J. Fletcher, published by Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, 1991. The computer programs have also been reviewed and tidied up. These are available on an IBM?? compatible floppy disc direct from the author. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many readers for their usually generous comments about the first edition and particularly those readers who went to the trouble of drawing specific errors to my attention. In this revised edi?? tion considerable effort has been made to remove a number of minor errors that had found their way into the original. I express the hope that no errors remain but welcome communication that will help me improve future editions. In preparing this revised edition I have received considerable help from Dr. K |

Title | Quantum Field Theory: Perspective and Prospective |
Author(s) | Dewitt-Morette, C??cile;Zuber, Jean-Bernard |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1999. |
Description | XX, 403 p. 24 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | It has been said that `String theorists talk to string theorists and everyone else wonders what they are saying'. This book will be a great help to those researchers who are challenged by modern quantum field theory. Quantum field theory experienced a renaissance in the late 1960s. Here, participants in the Les Houches sessions of 1970/75, now key players in quantum field theory and its many impacts, assess developments in their field of interest and provide guidance to young researchers challenged by these developments, but overwhelmed by their complexities. The book is not a textbook on string theory, rather it is a complement to Polchinski's book on string theory. It is a survey of current problems which have their origin in quantum field theory |

Title | Weber???s Electrodynamics |
Author(s) | Assis, Andre Koch Torres |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994. |
Description | XIV, 274 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | "Great progress has been made in electrical science, chiefly in Germany, by cultivators of the theory of action at a distance. The valuable electrical measurements of W. Weber are interpreted by him according to this theory, and the electromagnetic speculation which was originated by Gauss, and carried on by Weber, Riemann, F. and C. Neumann, Lorenz, etc. , is founded on the theory of action at a distance, but depending either directly on the relative velocity of the particles, or on the gradual propagation of something, whether potential or force, from the one particle to the other. The great success which these eminent men have attained in the application of mathematics to electrical phenomena, gives, as is natural, additional weight to their theoretical speculations, so that those who, as students of electricity, turn to them as the greatest authorities in mathematical electricity, would probably imbibe, along with their mathematical methods, their physical hypothesis. These physical hypotheses, however, are entirely alien from the way of looking at things which I adopt, and one object which I have in view is that some of those who wish to study electricity may, by reading this treatise, come to see that there is another way of treating the subject, which is no less fitted to explain the phenomena, and which, though in some parts it may appear less definite, corresponds, as I think, more faithfuHy with our actual knowledge, both in what it affirms and in what it leaves undecided |

Title | Finite Element Analysis for Heat Transfer : Theory and Software |
Author(s) | Huang, Hou-Cheng;Usmani, Asif S |
Publication | London, Springer London, 1994. |
Description | XI, 199 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This text presents an introduction to the application of the finite ele?? ment method to the analysis of heat transfer problems. The discussion has been limited to diffusion and convection type of heat transfer in solids and fluids. The main motivation of writing this book stems from two facts. Firstly, we have not come across any other text which provides an intro?? duction to the finite element method (FEM) solely from a heat transfer perspective. Most introductory texts attempt to teach FEM from a struc?? tural engineering background, which may distract non-structural engineers from pursuing this important subject with full enthusiasm. We feel that our approach provides a better alternative for non-structural engineers. Secondly, for people who are interested in using FEM for heat transfer, we have attempted to cover a wide range of topics, presenting the essential the?? ory and full implementational details including two FORTRAN programs. In addition to the basic FEM heat transfer concepts and implementation, we have also presented some modem techniques which are being used to enhance the accuracy and speed of the conventional method. In writing the text we have endeavoured to keep it accessible to persons with qualifications of no more than an engineering graduate. As mentioned earlier this book may be used to learn FEM by beginners, this may include undergraduate students and practicing engineers. However, there is enough advanced material to interest more experienced practitioners |

Title | Linear Prediction Theory : A Mathematical Basis for Adaptive Systems |
Author(s) | Strobach, Peter |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990. |
Description | XVI, 422 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Lnear prediction theory and the related algorithms have matured to the point where they now form an integral part of many real-world adaptive systems. When it is necessary to extract information from a random process, we are frequently faced with the problem of analyzing and solving special systems of linear equations. In the general case these systems are overdetermined and may be characterized by additional properties, such as update and shift-invariance properties. Usually, one employs exact or approximate least-squares methods to solve the resulting class of linear equations. Mainly during the last decade, researchers in various fields have contributed techniques and nomenclature for this type of least-squares problem. This body of methods now constitutes what we call the theory of linear prediction. The immense interest that it has aroused clearly emerges from recent advances in processor technology, which provide the means to implement linear prediction algorithms, and to operate them in real time. The practical effect is the occurrence of a new class of high-performance adaptive systems for control, communications and system identification applications. This monograph presumes a background in discrete-time digital signal processing, including Z-transforms, and a basic knowledge of discrete-time random processes. One of the difficulties I have en?? countered while writing this book is that many engineers and computer scientists lack knowledge of fundamental mathematics and geometry |

Author(s) | Hurtubise, Jacques;Lalonde, Fran??ois |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997. |
Description | XVII, 212 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Gauge theory, symplectic geometry and symplectic topology are important areas at the crossroads of several mathematical disciplines. The present book, with expertly written surveys of recent developments in these areas, includes some of the first expository material of Seiberg-Witten theory, which has revolutionised the subjects since its introduction in late 1994. Topics covered include: introductions to Seiberg-Witten theory, to applications of the S-W theory to four-dimensional manifold topology, and to the classification of symplectic manifolds; an introduction to the theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves and to quantum cohomology; algebraically integrable Hamiltonian systems and moduli spaces; the stable topology of gauge theory, Morse-Floer theory; pseudo-convexity and its relations to symplectic geometry; generating functions; Frobenius manifolds and topological quantum field theory |

Title | Dynamics, Bifurcation and Symmetry : New Trends and New Tools |
Author(s) | Chossat, Pascal |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994. |
Description | XV, 354 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book collects contributions to the conference" Dynamics, Bifurcation and Symmetry, new trends and new tools", which was held at the Institut d'Etudes Sci?? entifiques de Cargese (France), September 3-9, 1993. The first aim of this conference was to gather and summarize the work of the European Bifurcation Theory Group after two years of existence (the EBTG links european laboratories in five countries via an EC grant). Thanks to a NATO ARW grant, the conference developed into an international meeting on bifurcation theory and dynamical systems, with the partic?? ipation of leading specialists not only from Europe but also from overseas countries (Canada, USA, South America). It was a great satisfaction to notice the active, and quite enthusiastic participation of many young scientists. This is reflected in the present book for which many contributors are PhD students or post-doc researchers. Although several "big" themes (bifurcation with symmetry, low dimensional dynam?? ics, dynamics in EDP's, applications, . . . ) are present in these proceedings, we have divided the book into corresponding parts. In fact these themes overlap in most contributions, which seems to reflect a general tendancy in nonlinear science. I am very pleased to thank for their support the NATO International Exchange Scientific Program as well as the EEC Science Program, which made possible the suc?? cess of this conference |

Title | Fractals and Disordered Systems |
Author(s) | Bunde, Armin;Havlin, Shlomo |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1996. |
Description | XXII, 408 p. 54 illus., 25 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Fractals and disordered systems have recently become the focus of intense interest in research. This book discusses in great detail the effects of disorder on mesoscopic scales (fractures, aggregates, colloids, surfaces and interfaces, glasses and polymers) and presents tools to describe them in mathematical language. A substantial part is devoted to the development of scaling theories based on fractal concepts. In 10 chapters written by leading experts in the field, the reader is introduced to basic concepts and techniques in disordered systems and is led to the forefront of current research. In each chapter, the connection between theory and experiment is emphasized, and a special chapter on "Fractals and Experiment" presents experimental studies of fractal systems. This second edition has been substantially revised and updates the literature in this important field. It is pedagogically written and so will be useful for students, teachers, and scientists who want to become familiar with this facinating subject |
