TitleA Mathematical Primer on Quantum Mechanics
Author(s)Teta, Alessandro
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXI, 259 p. 7 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book offers a rigorous yet elementary approach to quantum mechanics that will meet the needs of Master???s-level Mathematics students and is equally suitable for Physics students who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the mathematical structure of the theory. Throughout the coverage, which is limited to single-particle quantum mechanics, the focus is on formulating theory and developing applications in a mathematically precise manner. Following a review of selected key concepts in classical physics and the historical background, the basic elements of the theory of operators in Hilbert spaces are presented and used to formulate the rules of quantum mechanics. The discussion then turns to free particles, harmonic oscillators, delta potential, and hydrogen atoms, providing rigorous proofs of the corresponding dynamical properties. Starting from an analysis of these applications, readers are subsequently introduced to more advanced topics such as the classical limit, scattering theory, and spectral analysis of Schr??dinger operators. The main content is complemented by numerous exercises that stimulate interactive learning and help readers check their progress.

TitleElectromagnetic Form Factors of Charmed Baryons in Lattice QCD
Author(s)Can, Kadir Utku
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2018.
DescriptionXII, 125 p. 34 illus., 13 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis presents the first lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) approach to the charmed baryon regime, building on the knowledge and experience gained with former lattice QCD applications to nucleon structure. The thesis provides valuable insights into the dynamics of yet unobserved charmed baryon systems. Most notably, it confirms that the expectations of model or effective field theoretical calculations of heavy-hadron systems hold qualitatively, while also demonstrating that they conflict with the quantitative results, pointing to a tension between these complementary approaches. Further, the book presents a cutting-edge approach to understanding the structure and dynamics of hadrons made of quarks and gluons using QCD, and successfully extends the approach to charmed hadrons. In particular, the thesis investigate a peculiar property of charmed hadrons whose dynamics, i.e., structure, deviates from their counterparts, e.g., those of protons and neutrons, by employing the lattice QCD approach ???a state-of-the-art numerical method and the powerful ab initio, non-perturbative method

TitleGravitational Waves : A New Window to the Universe
Author(s)Kembhavi, Ajit;Khare, Pushpa
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2020.
DescriptionXXVI, 161 p. 50 illus., 38 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteGravitational waves were first predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916, a year after the development of his new theory of gravitation known as the general theory of relativity. This theory established gravitation as the curvature of space-time produced by matter and energy. To be discernible even to the most sensitive instruments on Earth, the waves have to be produced by immensely massive objects like black holes and neutron stars which are rotating around each other, or in the extreme situations which prevail in the very early ages of the Universe. This book presents the story of the prediction of gravitational waves by Albert Einstein, the early attempts to detect the waves, the development of the LIGO detector, the first detection in 2016, the subsequent detections and their implications. All concepts are described in some detail, without the use of any mathematics and advanced physics which are needed for a full understanding of the subject. The book also contains description of electromagnetism, Einstein???s special theory and general theory of relativity, white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes and other concepts which are needed for understanding gravitational waves and their effects. Also described are the LIGO detectors and the cutting edge technology that goes into building them, and the extremely accurate measurements that are needed to detect gravitational waves. The book covers these ideas in a simple and lucid fashion which should be accessible to all interested readers. The first detection of gravitational waves was given a lot of space in the print and electronic media. So, the curiosity of the non-technical audience has been aroused about what gravitational waves really are and why they are so important. This book seeks to answer such questions

TitleAstronomy of the Inca Empire : Use and Significance of the Sun and the Night Sky
Author(s)Gullberg, Steven R
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVII, 370 p. 317 illus., 275 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteAstronomy in the Inca Empire was a robust and fundamental practice. The subsequent Spanish conquest of the Andes region disrupted much of this indigenous culture and resulted in a significant loss of information about its rich history. Through modern archaeoastronomy, this book helps recover and interpret some of these elements of Inca civilization. Astronomy was intricately woven into the very fabric of Andean existence and daily life. Accordingly, the text takes a holistic approach to its research, considering first and foremost the cultural context of each astronomy-related site. The chapters necessarily start with a history of the Incas from the beginning of their empire through the completion of the conquest by Spain before diving into an astronomical and cultural analysis of many of the huacas found in the heart of the Inca Empire. Over 300 color images???original artwork and many photos captured during the author???s extensive field research in Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, Cusco, and elsewhere???are included throughout the book, adding visual insight to a rigorous examination of Inca astronomical sites and history

TitleHenri Poincar??: Electrons to Special Relativity : Translation of Selected Papers and Discussion
Author(s)Popp, Bruce D
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVIII, 285 p. 7 illus., 4 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteProduced by an award-winning translator of Henri Poincar??, this book contains translations of several seminal articles by Poincar?? and discusses the experimental and theoretical investigations of electrons that form their context. In the 1950s, a dispute ignited about the origin of the theory of special relativity and thrust considerable notoriety on a paper written by Henri Poincar?? in 1905. Accordingly, Part I presents the relevant translations of Poincar?????s work showing that radiation carries momentum and the covariance of the equations of electrodynamics, the continuity equation for charge, and the spacetime interval. Part II then discusses investigations by Thomson, Becquerel, and Kaufmann of electrons in diverse contexts; contributions of Abraham, Lorentz and Poincar?? to a theory of electrons that includes Lorentz transformations and explains the dependence of mass on velocity; and finally, Poincar?????s exploration of the relativity principle, electron stability, and gravitation while rejecting absolute motion (ether) and an electromagnetic origin of mass. Part III contains the 1904 article by H. A. Lorentz presenting his transformations. This book will be a fascinating read to graduate-level students, physicists, and science historians who are interested in the development of electrodynamics and the classical, relativistic theory of electrons at the beginning of the 20th century

TitleHow Humankind Created Science : From Early Astronomy to Our Modern Scientific Worldview
Author(s)Chen, Falin;Hsu, Fang-Tzu
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXXVI, 582 p. 85 illus., 14 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe development of science has been an ideological struggle that lasted over three millennia. At and after the times of the Babylonian Empire, however, the pace of scientific evolution was painfully slow. This situation changed after Copernicus kick-started the Scientific Revolution with his heliocentric theory. Newton???s law of universal gravitation transformed natural philosophy, previously focused on mythology and abstract philosophical thinking, into an orderly and rational physical science. Einstein???s redefinition of space and time revealed a new and central principle of the Universe, paving the way for the huge amounts of energy held deep inside physical matter to be released. To this day, many of the our known physical theories represent an accumulation of changing knowledge over the long course of scientific history. But what kind of changes did the scientists see? What questions did they address? What methods did they use? What difficulties did they encounter? And what kind of persecution might they have faced on the road to discovering these beautiful, sometimes almost mystical, ideas? This book???s purpose is to investigate these questions. It leads the reader through the stories behind major scientific advancements and their theories, as well as explaining associated examples and hypotheses. Over the course of the journey, readers will come to understand the way scientists explore nature and how scientific theories are applied to natural phenomena and every-day technology

TitlePhase Space Dynamics in Plasma Based Wakefield Acceleration
Author(s)Xu, Xinlu
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2020.
DescriptionXIII, 129 p. 52 illus., 50 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book explores several key issues in beam phase space dynamics in plasma-based wakefield accelerators. It reveals the phase space dynamics of ionization-based injection methods by identifying two key phase mixing processes. Subsequently, the book proposes a two-color laser ionization injection scheme for generating high-quality beams, and assesses it using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. To eliminate emittance growth when the beam propagates between plasma accelerators and traditional accelerator components, a method using longitudinally tailored plasma structures as phase space matching components is proposed. Based on the aspects above, a preliminary design study on X-ray free-electron lasers driven by plasma accelerators is presented. Lastly, an important type of numerical noise???the numerical Cherenkov instabilities in particle-in-cell codes???is systematically studied

TitleGeometric Control of Fracture and Topological Metamaterials
Author(s)Mitchell, Noah
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXIX, 121 p. 49 illus., 48 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis reports a rare combination of experiment and theory on the role of geometry in materials science. It is built on two significant findings: that curvature can be used to guide crack paths in a predictive way, and that protected topological order can exist in amorphous materials. In each, the underlying geometry controls the elastic behavior of quasi-2D materials, enabling the control of crack propagation in elastic sheets and the control of unidirectional waves traveling at the boundary of metamaterials. The thesis examines the consequences of this geometric control in a range of materials spanning many orders of magnitude in length scale, from amorphous macroscopic networks and elastic continua to nanoscale lattices

TitleSymmetries in Atomic Nuclei : From Isospin to Supersymmetry
Author(s)Frank, Alejandro;Jolie, Jan;Van Isacker, Pieter
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXIII, 209 p. 62 illus., 5 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe revised edition of this established work presents an extended overview of recent applications of symmetry to the description of atomic nuclei, including a pedagogical introduction to symmetry concepts using simple examples. Following a historical overview of the applications of symmetry in nuclear physics, attention turns to more recent progress in the field. Special emphasis is placed on the introduction of neutron-proton and boson-fermion degrees of freedom. Their combination leads to a supersymmetric description of pairs and quartets of nuclei. Expanded and updated throughout, the book now features separate chapters on the nuclear shell model and the interacting boson model, the former including discussion of recent results on seniority in a single-j shell. Both theoretical aspects and experimental signatures of dynamical (super)symmetries are carefully discussed. This book focuses on nuclear structure physics, but its broad scope makes it suitable for final-year or post-graduate students and researchers interested in understanding the power and beauty of symmetry methods in physics. Review of the 1st Edition: "The subject of this book, symmetries in physical systems, with particular focus on atomic nuclei, is of the utmost importance in modern physical science. In contrast to most treatments, frequently characterized by fearsome formalism, this book leads the reader step-by-step, in an easily understandable way, through this fascinating field...this book is remarkably accessible to both theorists and experimentalists. Indeed, I view it as essential reading for experimental nuclear structure physicists. This is one of the finest volumes on this subject I have ever encountered." Prof. R.F. Casten, Yale University
