TitleKalman Filtering : with Real-Time Applications
Author(s)Chui, Charles K;Chen, Guanrong
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXVIII, 247 p. 34 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis new edition presents a thorough discussion of the mathematical theory and computational schemes of Kalman filtering. The filtering algorithms are derived via different approaches, including a direct method consisting of a series of elementary steps, and an indirect method based on innovation projection. Other topics include Kalman filtering for systems with correlated noise or colored noise, limiting Kalman filtering for time-invariant systems, extended Kalman filtering for nonlinear systems, interval Kalman filtering for uncertain systems, and wavelet Kalman filtering for multiresolution analysis of random signals. Most filtering algorithms are illustrated by using simplified radar tracking examples. The style of the book is informal, and the mathematics is elementary but rigorous. The text is self-contained, suitable for self-study, and accessible to all readers with a minimum knowledge of linear algebra, probability theory, and system engineering. Over 100 exercises and problems with solutions help deepen the knowledge. This new edition has a new chapter on filtering communication networks and data processing, together with new exercises and new real-time applications

TitleEnergy-Efficient VCSELs for Optical Interconnects
Author(s)Moser, Philip
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXV, 182 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis dissertation provides the first systematic analysis of the dynamic energy efficiency of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) for optical interconnects, a key technology to address the pressing ecological and economic issues of the exponentially growing energy consumption in data centers. Energy-efficient data communication is one of the most important ???elds in ???Green Photonics??? enabling higher bit rates at signi???cantly reduced energy consumption per bit. In this thesis the static and dynamic properties of GaAs-based oxide-confined VCSELs emitting at 850 nm and 980 nm are analyzed and general rules for achieving energy-efficient data transmission using VCSELs at any wavelength are derived. These rules are verified in data transmission experiments leading to record energy-efficient data transmission across a wide range of multimode optical fiber distances and at high temperatures up to 85??C. Important trade-offs between energy efficiency, temperature stability, modulation bandwidth, low current-density operation and other VCSEL properties are revealed and discussed

TitleCognitive Underwater Acoustic Networking Techniques
Author(s)Sotnik, Dimitri;Goetz, Michael;Nissen, Ivor
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2020.
DescriptionXI, 81 p. 25 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book summarizes the latest research on cognitive network-layer methods and smart adaptive physical-layer methods in underwater networks. Underwater communication requires extendable and delay-tolerant underwater acoustic networks capable of supporting multiple frequency bands, data rates and transmission ranges. The book also discusses a suitable foreground communication stack for mixed mobile/static networks, a technology that requires adaptive physical layer waveforms and cognitive network strategies with underlying cooperative and non-cooperative robust processes. The goal is to arrive at a universally applicable standard in the area of Underwater Internet-of-Things [ISO/IEC 30140, 30142, 30143].

Author(s)Pelton, Joseph N;Madry, Scott
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
Description476 illus., 441 illus. in color. eReference : online resource
Abstract NoteIn the past decade, the field of small satellites has expanded the space industry in a powerful way. Hundreds, indeed thousands, of these innovative and highly cost-efficient satellites are now being launched from Earth to establish low-cost space systems. These smallsats are engaged in experiments and prototype testing, communications services, data relay, internet access, remote sensing, defense and security related services, and more. Some of these systems are quite small and are simple student experiments, while others in commercial constellations are employing state-of-the-art technologies to deliver fast and accurate services. This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of this exciting new field. It covers the technology, applications and services, design and manufacture, launch arrangements, ground systems, and economic and regulatory arrangements surrounding small satellites. The diversity of approach in recent years has allowed for rapid innovation and economic breakthroughs to proceed at a pace that seems only to be speeding up. In this reference work, readers will find information pertaining to all aspects of the small satellite industry, written by a host of international experts in the field

PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionVII, 199 p. 66 illus., 3 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteHow do James Bond???s X-ray glasses work, the ones he uses to see whether the lady at the roulette table has a pistol concealed in her underwear? Is it really possible to launch oneself into the air and catch up with a plane that is free-falling towards the earth? Or to shoot down a helicopter with a pistol? In this lively and informative book, Germany's boldest physics professor Metin Tolan analyses the stunts and gadgets of the 007 films and even answers the question of all questions: Why does Bond drink his vodka martini shaken, not stirred? "So much entertaining science is a rare thing." Spiegel Online

PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVII, 269 p. 21 illus., 16 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe internet can look forward to a fantastic future! With new quantum technology, hacker-proof exchange of information and ultrafast data processing will become possible. The basis for these is Albert Einstein's "quantum spook". We are not dealing here with sorcery, but with hard-core science. This book undertakes a fascinating journey through the world of our quantum future - from the first "quantum satellite" to high-security internet, the quantum cloud and beyond, to partly futuristic applications. The author guides the reader through the basic ideas of quantum physics, explains the concepts of quantum computers, quantum cryptography, and quantum teleportation, and then establishes their relationship to the quantum Internet. Special attention is paid not only to the technical challenges involved, but also to the likely effects on society. Alongside examples of implementation, the author intersperses delightful anecdotes, which bring the story to life. With this book you will learn how quantum physics can revolutionize the internet! "... in lively prose the author presents the current state of research in its whole breadth and splendour ??? valuable and entertaining reading!???
