Author(s) | Buchanan, B |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1996. |
Description | XX, 362 p. 70 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The usage of data communications and computer networks are ever in?? creasing. It is one of the few technological areas which brings benefits to most of the countries and the peoples of the world. Without it many industries could not exist. It is the objective of this book to discuss data communications in a readable form that students and professionals all over the world can understand. As much as possible the text uses dia?? grams to illustrate key points. Most currently available data communications books take their view?? point from either a computer scientists top-down approach or from an electronic engineers bottom-up approach. This book takes a practical ap?? proach and supports it with a theoretical background to create a textbook which can be used by electronic engineers, computer engineers, computer scientists and industry professionals. It discusses most of the current and future key data communications technologies, including: ??? Data Communications Standards and Models; ??? Local Area Networks (Ethernet, Token Ring and FDDI); ??? Transmission Control ProtocollInternet Protocol (TCPIIP); ??? High-level Data Link Control (HDLC); ??? X.25 Packet-switching; ??? Asynchronous Communications (RS-232) and Modems; ??? Pulse Coded Modulation (PCM); ??? Integrated Digital Services Network (ISDN); ??? Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM); ??? Error Control; ??? X-Windows. The chapters are ordered in a possible structure for the presentation of the material and have not been sectioned into data communications areas |

Title | Electron and Magnetization Densities in Molecules and Crystals |
Author(s) | Becker, Pierre |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1980. |
Description | XIII, 904 p. 266 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The interest of describing the ground state properties of a system in terms of one electron density (or its two spin components) is obvious, in particular due to the simple physical significance of this function. Recent experimental progress in diffraction made the measurement of charge and magnetization densities in crystalline solids possible, with an accuracy at least as good as theoretical accuracy. Theoretical developments of the many-body problem have proved the extreme importance of the one electron density function and presently, accurate methods of band structure determination become available. Parallel to the diffraction techniques, other domains of research (inelastic scattering, resonance, molecular spectroscopy) deal with quantities directly related to the one particle density. But the two types of studies do not interfere enough and one should obviously gain more information by interpreting all experiments that are related to the density together. It became necessary to have an International School that reviews the status of the art in the domain of "ELECTRON AND MAGNETIZATION DENSITIES IN MOLECULES AND CRYSTALS". This was made possible through the generous effort of N.A.T.O. 's Scientific Affairs Division, and I would specially thank Dr. T. KESTER, the head of this Division, for his help and competence. An Advanced Study Institute was thus held in ARLES, south France, from the 16th to the 31st of August 1978 |

Description | X, 266 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The seventh Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held for the second time at the Club St. Croix, in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The ASI brought together a total of 75 participants, from 19 countries. The primary support for the meeting was again provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The ASI was cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, by Fermilab, by the National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contribution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as support for worthy students from developing countries. As in the case of the previous ASIs, the scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics. The present volume of lectures should complement the material published in the first six ASIs, and prove to be of value to a wider audience of physicists |

Title | Instrumentation: A Reader : A reader |
Author(s) | Loxton, R;Pope, P |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1990. |
Description | 272 p. 28 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book contains a selection of papers and articles in instrumentation previously pub?? lished in technical periodicals and journals of learned societies. Our selection has been made to illustrate aspects of current practice and applications of instrumentation. The book does not attempt to be encyclopaedic in its coverage of the subject, but to provide some examples of general transduction techniques, of the sensing of particular measurands, of components of instrumentation systems and of instrumentation practice in two very different environments, the food industry and the nuclear power industry. We have made the selection particularly to provide papers appropriate to the study of the Open University course T292 Instrumentation. The papers have been chosen so that the book covers a wide spectrum of instrumentation techniques. Because of this, the book should be of value not only to students of instrumen?? tation, but also to practising engineers and scientists wishing to glean ideas from areas of instrumentation outside their own fields of expertise. In recent years instrumentation has emerged as a discipline in its own right rather than as an adjunct to traditional science and engineering disciplines. This development has been driven partly by the needs of industries for new and improved sensing techniques, and partly by new technological developments such as microprocessors, optical fibres and in?? tegrated silicon sensors which are revolutionising sensing and signal processing practice |

Title | Wavelet Basics |
Author(s) | Chan, Y. T |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1995. |
Description | IX, 134 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Since the study of wavelets is a relatively new area, much of the research coming from mathematicians, most of the literature uses terminology, concepts and proofs that may, at times, be difficult and intimidating for the engineer. Wavelet Basics has therefore been written as an introductory book for scientists and engineers. The mathematical presentation has been kept simple, the concepts being presented in elaborate detail in a terminology that engineers will find familiar. Difficult ideas are illustrated with examples which will also aid in the development of an intuitive insight. Chapter 1 reviews the basics of signal transformation and discusses the concepts of duals and frames. Chapter 2 introduces the wavelet transform, contrasts it with the short-time Fourier transform and clarifies the names of the different types of wavelet transforms. Chapter 3 links multiresolution analysis, orthonormal wavelets and the design of digital filters. Chapter 4 gives a tour d'horizon of topics of current interest: wavelet packets and discrete time wavelet transforms, and concludes with applications in signal processing |

Description | IX, 441 p. 38 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The 1986 Advanced Study Institute on "The Physics of the two-Dimen?? sional Electron Gas" took place at the Conference Centre liTer Helme", close to Oostende (Belgium), from June 2 till 16, 1986. We were motivated to organize this Advanced Study Institute in view of the recent experimental and theoretical progress in the study of the two-dimensional electron gas. An additional motivation was our own theore?? tical interest in cyclotron resonance in two-dimensional electron systems at our institute. It is my pleasure to thank several instances and people who made this Advanced Study Institute possible. First of all, the sponsor of the Advanced Study Institute, the NATO Scientific Committee. Furthermore, the co?? sponsors: Agfa Gevaert, Bell Telephone Mfg. Co. N.V., Burroughs Belgium. Control Data. Digital Equipment Corporation, Esso Belgium. European Research Office (USA). Kredietbank. National Science Foundation (USA). Special thanks are due to the members of the Program Committee and the members of the Organizing Committee. I would also like to thank Mrs. H. Title | Electrodynamics of Continua II : Fluids and Complex Media |
Author(s) | Eringen, A.Cemal;Maugin, Gerard A |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1990. |
Description | XIII, 363 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This is the second volume of a two-volume set presenting a unified approach to the electrodynamics of continua, based on the principles of contemporary continuum of physics. The first volume was devoted mainly to the development of the theory and applications to deformable solid media. This volume extends the developments of the first volume to richer and newer grounds. It contains discussions on fluid media, magnetohydrodynamics, eletrohydrodynamics and media with more complicated structures. With the discussion, in the last two chapters, of memory-dependent materials and non-local E-M theory, the authors account for the nonlocal effects arising from motions and fields of material points at past times and at spatially distant points. This discussion is included here to stimulate further research in these important fields, which are presently in development stages. The second volume is self-contained and can be studied without the help of volume I. A section summarizing the constitutive equations and the underlying physical ideas, which were presented in more detail in the first volume, is included. This volume may be used as a basis for several graduate courses in engineering schools, applied mathematics and physics departments. It also contains fresh ideas and will stimulate further research in the directions the authors outline |

Title | Electrodynamics of Continua I : Foundations and Solid Media |
Author(s) | Eringen, A. Cemal;Maugin, Gerard A |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1990. |
Description | XVII, 436 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The electrodynamics of continua is a branch ofthe physical sciences concerned with the interaction of electromagnetic fields with deformable bodies. De?? formable bodies are considered to be continua endowed with continuous distributions of mass and charge. The theory of electromagnetic continua is concerned with the determination of deformations, motions, stress, and elec?? tromagnetic fields developed in bodies upon the applications of external loads. External loads may be of mechanical origin (e.g., forces, couples, constraints placed on the surface of the body, and initial and boundary conditions arising from thermal and other changes) and/or electromagnetic origin (e.g., electric, magnetic, and current fields). Because bodies of different constitutions respond to external stimuli in a different way, it is imperative to characterize properly the response functions relevant to a given class of continua. This is done by means of the constitutive theory. For example, an elastic dielectric responds to electromagnetic fields in a totally different way than a magnetic fluid. The present book is intended to present a unified approach to the subject matter, based on the principles of contemporary continuum physics |

Title | Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena : Volume 2 Proceedings of the Second Workshop, held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Hartford Graduate Center, Hartford, Connecticut, August 30???September 3, 1971 |
Author(s) | Hora, Heinrich |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1972. |
Description | XIV, 583 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Paul Harteck Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, New York When the Maser and the Laser Were discovered, people were speculating if this was the beginning of a new page, or even a new chapter, in the Book of Physics. The Second Workshop on "Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena" held in Hartford made it clear that the perspective had changed, that people now question if the consequences of these discoveries constitute a new chapter, or possibly a new era in Physics. While the papers presented were all stimulating and of out?? standing quality, of special interest were the experiments which demonstrated that triggering of thermonuclear fusion by Laser techniques is indeed in the realm of the possible. Along these lines, I enjoy recalling an anecdote concerning the late F. G. Houtermans. I think that all who knew him will agree that he was an unusual genius and at the same time a very amusing colleague |
