Title | Energy Transmission and Synchronization in Complex Networks : Mathematical Principles |
Author(s) | Rubido, Nicol??s |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2016. |
Description | XVII, 117 p. 32 illus., 14 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This work tackles the problems of understanding how energy is transmitted and distributed in power-grids as well as in determining how robust this transmission and distribution is when modifications to the grid or power occur. The most important outcome is the derivation of explicit relationships between the structure of the grid, the optimal transmission and distribution of energy, and the grid???s collective behavior (namely, the synchronous generation of power). These relationships are extremely relevant for the design of resilient power-grid models. To allow the reader to apply these results to other complex systems, the thesis includes a review of relevant aspects of network theory, spectral theory, and novel analytical calculations to predict the existence and stability of periodic collective behavior in complex networks of phase oscillators, which constitute a paradigmatic model for many complex systems |

Title | Lords of the Ice Moons : A Scientific Novel |
Author(s) | Carroll, Michael |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XVIII, 213 p. 16 illus., 6 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the aftermath of an asteroid impact, Earth???s power grid is damaged nearly beyond recovery. The survival of our world may well depend on energy sources collected from an abandoned undersea settlement beneath the icy surface of Enceladus. Earth-raised Colonel Carter Rhodes, in charge of Earth???s recovery efforts, calls upon Gwen Bar??, a Venusian engineer, to regain control of the deserted moon outpost and collect fuel for Earth???s collapsing power grids. However, what Gwen discovers churning in the subsurface waters of Enceladus brings their straightforward plans to a crashing halt. Soon, Gwen finds herself in the middle of an interplanetary standoff. Win, and give the last humans on Earth a chance to survive. Lose, and risk the permanent dismantling of human society across the Solar System. Forced to take sides in this war for power, resources, and species survival, Gwen must make choices that not only affect her own life, but also force her to question what "life" itself might really mean. Will the promise of Enceladus energy be enough to salvage what is left of Earth???s society? Are these humans worthy of salvation? |

Title | Vibro-Acoustics, Volume 2 |
Author(s) | Nilsson, Anders;Liu, Bilong |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2016. |
Description | X, 452 p. 213 illus., 17 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This three-volume book gives a thorough and comprehensive presentation of vibration and acoustic theories. Different from traditional textbooks which typically deal with some aspects of either acoustic or vibration problems, it is unique of this book to combine those two correlated subjects together. Moreover, it provides fundamental analysis and mathematical descriptions for several crucial phenomena of Vibro-Acoustics which are quite useful in noise reduction, including how structures are excited, energy flows from an excitation point to a sound radiating surface, and finally how a structure radiates noise to a surrounding fluid. Many measurement results included in the text make the reading interesting and informative. Problems/questions are listed at the end of each chapter and the solutions are provided. This will help the readers to understand the topics of Vibro-Acoustics more deeply. The book should be of interest to anyone interested in sound and vibration, vehicle acoustics, ship acoustics and interior aircraft noise. This is the second volume, and covers the following topics: Hamilton???s principle and some other variational methods, Structural coupling between simple systems including resilient mountings, Waves in fluids, Fluid structure interaction and radiation of sound to light and heavy fluids, Sound transmission loss of panels and shells, Waveguides and sandwich structures, Random and TBL excitation of plates and shells, Energy flow in built up structures |

Title | The Dynamics of Electrons in Linear Plasma Devices and Its Impact on Plasma Surface Interaction |
Author(s) | Hubeny, Michael |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | XIV, 126 p. 67 illus., 37 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Turbulence in plasma surface interaction holds crucial uncertainties for its impact on material erosion in the operation of fusion reactors. In this thesis, the design, development and operation of a Thomson scattering diagnostic and its novel implementation with fast visual imaging created a versatile tool to investigate intermittently occuring plasma oscillations. Specifically, ballistic transport events in the plasma edge, constituting turbulent transport, have been targeted in this thesis. With the help of a custom photon counting algorithm, the conditional averaging technique was applied on Thomson scattering for the first time to allow spatial and pseudo-time-resolved measurements. Since plasma turbulence and the emerging transport phenomena are comparable in most magnetized devices, the diagnostic development and the results from the linear plasma device PSI-2 are useful for an implementation of similar techniques in larger fusion experiments. Furthermore, the obtained results indicate a strong enhancement of erosion with turbulent transport and thus underline the importance of dedicated experiments investigating plasma turbulence in the framework of erosion in future fusion reactors |

Title | Diagnosis and Robust Control of Complex Building Central Chilling Systems for Enhanced Energy Performance |
Author(s) | Gao, Dian-Ce |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Singapore, 2019. |
Description | XX, 180 p. 99 illus., 91 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book discusses enhancing the overall energy performance of building central air-conditioning systems through fault diagnosis and robust control strategies. Fault diagnosis strategies aim to determine the exact cause of problems and evaluate the energy impact on the system, while robust control strategies aim to manage chilled water systems to avoid the occurrence of low delta-T syndrome and deficit flow problems. Presenting the first academic study of the diagnostic method and control mechanism of ???small temperature difference syndrome???, the book describes the highly robust and adaptive fault-tolerant control method developed to overcome the influences of external disturbance on the process control in practical applications. The diagnostic technology developed provides a predictive assessment of the energy dissipation effect of the fault. This book is a valuable reference resource for researchers and designers in the areas of building energy management and built environment control, as well as for senior undergraduate and graduate students |

Title | Electric Potential in Toroidal Plasmas |
Author(s) | Melnikov, A.V |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | XV, 240 p. 202 illus., 194 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This work introduces heavy ion beam probe diagnostics and presents an overview of its applications. The heavy ion beam probe is a unique tool for the measurement of potential in the plasma core in order to understand the role of the electric field in plasma confinement, including the mechanism of transition from low to high confinement regimes (L???H transition). This allows measurement of the steady-state profile of the plasma potential, and its use has been extended to include the measurement of quasi-monochromatic and broadband oscillating components, the turbulent-particle flux and oscillations of the electron density and poloidal magnetic field. Special emphasis is placed on the study of Geodesic Acoustic Modes and Alfv??n Eigenmodes excited by energetic particles with experimental data sets. These experimental studies help to understand the link between broadband turbulent physics and quasi-coherent oscillations in devices with a rather different magnetic configuration. The book also compares spontaneous and biased transitions from low to high confinement regimes on both classes of closed magnetic traps (tokamak and stellarator) and highlights the common features in the behavior of electric potential and turbulence of magnetized plasmas. A valuable resource for physicists, postgraduates and students specializing in plasma physics and controlled fusion |
