Title | Micromechanics and Nanoscale Effects : MEMS, Multi-Scale Materials and Micro-Flows |
Author(s) | Harik, Vasyl Michael;Li-Shi Luo |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2004. |
Description | XV, 240 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume consists of the state-of-the-art reports on new developments in micromechanics and the modeling of nanoscale effects, and is a companion book to the recent Kluwer volume on nanomechanics and mul- scale modeling (it is entitled Trends in Nanoscale Mechanics). The two volumes grew out of a series of discussions held at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), lectures and other events shared by many researchers from the national research laboratories and academia. The key events include the 2001 Summer Series of Round-Table Discussions on Nanotechnology at ICASE Institute (NASA LaRC) organized by Drs. V. M. Harik and M. D. Salas and the 2002 NASA LaRC Workshop on Multi-scale Modeling. The goal of these interactions was to foster collaborations between academic researchers and the ICASE Institute (NASA LaRC), a universi- based institute, which has pioneered world-class computational, theoretical and experimental research in the disciplines that are important to NASA. Editors gratefully acknowledge help of Ms. E. Todd (ICASE, NASA LaRC), the ICASE Director M. D. Salas and all reviewers, in particular, Dr. B. Diskin (ICASE/NIA, NASA LaRC), Prof. R. Haftka (University of Florida), Dr. V. M. Harik (ICASE/Swales Aerospace, NASA LaRC), Prof |

Author(s) | Jones, Hugh R.A;Steele, Iain A |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2001. |
Description | VIII, 197 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book records our current understanding of the observational and theoretical properties of objects known as ultracool dwarfs. It covers the state of the art in this new field. It is split into theoretical, observational and spectral classification sections. Each subject area begins with an introduction by an eminent scientist. It covers a wide range of issues, such as the transition from L to T dwarfs, dust and alkali metal modelling, companions, activity, the deuterium test, and brown dwarf variability, and contains considerable discussion about spectral classification schemes. The articles arose from an IAU meeting and they address researchers as well as graduate students |

Title | Unified Strength Theory and Its Applications |
Author(s) | Yu, Mao-Hong |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004. |
Description | XX, 412 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This is a completely new theory dealing with the yield and failure of materials under multi-axial stresses. It provides a system of yield and failure criteria adopted for most materials, from metallic materials to rocks, concretes, soils, polymers etc. The Unified Strength Theory has been applied successfully to analyse the elastic limit, plastic limit capacities, the dynamic response behavior for some structures under static and moderate impulsive load, and may be implemented in some elasto-plastic finite element computer codes. The Unified Strength Theory is described in detail and by using this theory a series of results can be obtained. The Unified Strength Theory can improve the conservative Mohr-Coulomb Theory, and since intermediate principal stress is not taken into account in the Mohr-Coulomb theory and most experimental data is not pertainable to the Mohr-Coulomb Theory, a considerable economic benefit may be obtained. The book can also increase the effect of most commercial finite element computer codes |

Title | Laser Techniques for Fluid Mechanics : Selected Papers from the 10th International Symposium Lisbon, Portugal July 10???13, 2000 |
Author(s) | Adrian, R.J;Durao, D.F.G;Heitor, M.V;Maeda, M;Tropea, Cameron;Whitelaw, J.H |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002. |
Description | X, 566 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume includes revised and extended versions of selected papers presented at the Tenth International Symposium on Applications of Laser Techniques to Fluid Mechanics held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, during the period of July 10 to 13, 2000. The papers describe instrumentation developments for Velocity, Scalar and Multi-Phase Flows and results of measurements of Turbulent Flows, and Combustion and Engines. The papers demonstrate the continuing and healthy interest in the development of understanding of new methodologies and implementation in terms of new instrumentation. The prime objective of the Tenth Symposium was to provide a forum for the presentation of the most advanced research on laser techniques for flow measurements, and communicate significant results to fluid mechanics. The application of laser techniques to scientific and engineering fluid flow research was emphasized, but contributions to the theory and practice of laser methods were also considered where they facilitate new improved fluid mechanic research. Attention was placed on laser-Doppler anemometry, particle sizing and other methods for the measurement of velocity and scalars, such as particle image velocimetry and laser induced fluorescence |

Title | Thin Films on Glass |
Author(s) | Bach, Hans;Krause, Dieter |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003. |
Description | XX, 436 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Thin Films on Glass. This book is one of a series reporting on international research and development activities conducted by the Schott Group companies. With the series Schott aims to provide an overview of its activites for scientists, engineers, and managers from all branches of industry worldwide where glass and glass ceramics are of interest. Each volume begins with a chapter providing a general idea of the current problems, results, and trends relating to the subject treated. This volume describes the development of active and passive thin films on glass at Schott. Design strategies, the use of conventional and newly developed production technologies of thin films on glass, and the application of characterization methods for the structure of thin films and their properties are reported. Several examples illustrate how the the best suited film materials and deposition and processing parameters. may be selected. Particular chapters treat the topics of flip-flop layers (coatings consisting of very thin high- and low-index layers), wave-guiding films, Rugate filters and gradient devices, optical transducers, laser coatings, cold light mirrors, sol-gel solutions for thin film production with dip coating processes, the coating of window panes with solar reflection coatings, and rear-view mirrors for cars. The book is conceived as a monograph. The individual chapters, however, are written by leading Schott experts on the corresponding subjects. In all the chapters, tables and examples are chosen to introduce the reader to thin film science and technology. Numerous references are given to more detailed literature |

Title | Fractal Concepts in Condensed Matter Physics |
Author(s) | Nakayama, Tsuneyoshi;Yakubo, Kousuke |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003. |
Description | XIII, 210 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Concisely and clearly written, this book provides a self-contained introduction to the basic concepts of fractals and demonstrates their use in a range of topics in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. The first part outlines different fractal structures observed in condensed matter. The main part of the book is dedicated to the dynamical behaviour of fractal structures, including anomalous and percolating systems. The concept of multifractals is illustrated for the metal-insulator quantum phase transition. The authors emphasizes the unified description of these different dynamic problems, thus making the book accessible to readers who are new to the field |
