Title | Surface Scattering Experiments with Conduction Electrons |
Author(s) | Schumacher, Dieter |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993. |
Description | IX, 97 p. 11 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Surface Scattering Experiments with Conduction Electrons shows how this process can be used to investigate surface processes of thin metal films. Since a thin film is in one direction of a size comparable to the mean free path of the conduction electrons, such a film is both substrate and sensor and must be characterized by other surface-analytical methodsas demonstrated here. Also discussed is how the dc-resistivity measurement permits the study of surface processes such as adsorption, desorption, and surface diffusion up to crystalline growth. The in situ observation of epitaxial growth is additionally shown to be possible. Thus the electronic structure of superimposed metal films and superlattices can be elucidated. This is an essential topic for all surface physicists |

Title | Insulating Films on Semiconductors : Proceedings of the Second International Conference, INFOS 81, Erlangen, Fed. Rep. of Germany, April 27???29, 1981 |
Author(s) | Schulz, M;Pensl, G |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1981. |
Description | X, 318 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The INFOS 81 Conference on Insulating Films on Semiconductors was held at the University of Erlangen-NUrnberg in Erlangen from 27 to 29 April 1981. This conference was a sequel to the first conference INFOS 79 held in Durham. INFOS 81 attracted 170 participants from universities, research institutes and industry. Attendants were registered from 15 nations. The biannual topical conference series will be continued by INFOS 83 to be held in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in April 1983. The conference proceedings include all the invited (Y) and contrlDUtea (42) papers presented at the meeting. The topics range from the basic physical understanding of the properties of insulating films and their interface to semiconductors to the discussion of stability and dielectric strength as well as growing and deposition techniques which are relevant for technical applications. Strong emphasis was given to the semiconductor silicon and its native oxide; however, sessions on compound semiconductors and other insulating films also raised strong interest. The proceedings survey the present state of our understanding of the system of insulating films on semiconductors. As a new aspect of the topic, the properties of semiconductors deposited and laser processed on insulating films was in?? cluded for the first time |

Title | Concepts in Surface Physics |
Author(s) | Desjonqueres, M-C;Spanjaard, D |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993. |
Description | XIII, 565 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This textbook is intended as an introduction to surface science for graduate students. It began as a course of lectures that we gave at the University of Paris (Orsay). Its main objectives are twofold: to provide the reader with a compre?? hensive presentation of the basic principles and concepts of surface physics and to show the usefulness of these concepts in the real world by referring to experiments. It starts at a rather elementary level since it only requires a knowledge of solid state physics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical physics which does not exceed the background usually taught to students early in their university courses. However, since it finally reaches an advanced level, we have tried to render it as self-contained as possible so that it remains accessible even to an unexperienced reader. Furthermore, the emphasis has been put on a pedagogical level rather than on a technical level. In this spirit, whenever possible, models which are simplified, but which contain the features that are essential to the appearance of the phenomena, have been set up and solved in a completely analytical way. The logic should be transparent enough for the reader although, most often, a more rigorous solution would need the use of a computer. To conclude, we have tried to give an account of surface physics which should be of use to the theoretician as well as to the experimentalist. The following comments can be made on the contents of this book |

Title | Semiconductor Physics : An Introduction |
Author(s) | Seeger, Karlheinz |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | XIV, 504 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Televisions, telephones, watches, calculators, robots, airplanes and space vehicles all depend on silicon chips. Life as we know it would hardly be possible without semiconductor devices. An understanding of how these devices work requires a detailed knowledge of the physics of semiconductors, including charge transport and the emission and absorption of electromagnetic waves. This book may serve both as a university textbook and as a reference for research and microelectronics engineering. Each section of the book begins with a description of an experiment. The theory is then developed as far as necessary to understand the experimental results. Everyone with high-school mathematics should be able to follow the calculations. The band structure calculations for the diamond and zinc blende types of lattice are supplemented with a personal computer program. Semiconductor physics developed most rapidly in the two decades following the invention of the transistor, and naturally most of the references date from this time. But recent developments such as the Gunn effect, the acoustoelectric effect, superlattices, quantum well structures, and the quantum Hall effect are also discussed. The exercises provided (answers to which are available) will greatly assist the student in consolidating the material presented. From the reviews:"This book is a must for any theoretical and experimental physicist working in the area of semiconductor physics." #Physicalia#1 |

Title | Physical Properties of Quasicrystals |
Author(s) | Stadnik, Zbigniew M |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999. |
Description | XVI, 443 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Physical Properties of Quasicrystals presents an up-to-date introduction to the field of quasicrystals, a new form of matter which was discovered only in 1984. The field is inspected from an experimental point of view and the results are interpreted within the framework of the existing theoretical models. The book discusses our current understanding of the unusual physical properties of quasicrystals, as well as highlighting the challenges associated with the physical interpretation of the properties of these complex and fascinating materials. The book is written by a team of active researchers and conveys the sense of an excitement associated with research in a rapidly developing area of new alloys. A wealth of measured experimental data is presented and important information is given in a convenient tabular form. Although the book is aimed at a broad audience interested in the intriguing physical properties of these novel alloys, it will be of general use both to long-time workers in the field and uninitiated graduate students |

Author(s) | Wette, Frederick W. de |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988. |
Description | XII, 501 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The articles collected in this volume give a broad overview of the current state of surface science. Pioneers in the field and researchers met together at this Solvay Conference to discuss important new developments in surface science, with an emphasis on the common area between solid state physics and physical chemistry. The contributions deal with the following subjects: structure of surfaces, surface science and catalysis, two-dimensional physics and phase transitions, scanning tunneling microscopy, surface scattering and surface dynamics, chemical reactions at surfaces, solid-solid interfaces and superlattices, and surface studies with synchrotron radiation. On each of these subjects an introductory review talk and a number of short research contributions are followed by extensive discussions, which appear in full in the text. This nineteenth Solvay Conference commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Solvay Institutes |

Title | Magnetic Domains : The Analysis of Magnetic Microstructures |
Author(s) | Hubert, Alex;Sch??fer, Rudolf |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998. |
Description | XXIII, 696 p. 1072 illus., 5 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | The rich world of magnetic microstructure or magnetic domains - extending from the "nano-world" to visible dimensions - is systematically covered in this book. The subject, which might be called "mesomagnetism", forms the link between atomic foundations and technical applications of magnetic materials, ranging from computer storage systems to the magnetic cores of electrical machinery. The structures and processes in the hidden inner world of magnets are also favourite examples in the theoretical analysis of complex systems. Independent of their scientific and technical relevance, magnetic microstructures are also esthetically appealing, and the authors could not resist this aspect of their work |

Title | Surface Phonons |
Author(s) | Kress, Winfried;Wette, Frederik W. de |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | XII, 301 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In recent years substantial progress has been made in the detection of surface phonons owing to considerable improvements in inelastic rare gas scattering tech?? niques and electron energy loss spectroscopy. With these methods it has become possible to measure surface vibrations in a wide energy range for all wave vectors in the two-dimensional Brillouin zone and thus to deduce the complete surface phonon dispersion curves. Inelastic atomic beam scattering and electron energy loss spectroscopy have started to play a role in the study of surface phonons similar to the one played by inelastic neutron scattering in the investigation of bulk phonons in the last thirty years. Detailed comparison between experimen?? tal results and theoretical studies of inelastic surface scattering and of surface phonons has now become feasible. It is therefore possible to test and to improve the details of interaction models which have been worked out theoretically in the last few decades. At this point we felt that a concise, coherent and self-contained guide to the rapidly growing field of surface phonons was needed |

Title | Surface Acoustic Waves in Inhomogeneous Media |
Author(s) | Biryukov, Sergey V;Gulyaev, Yuri V;Krylov, Victor V;Plessky, Victor P |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | X, 389 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Surface Acoustic Waves in Inhomogeneous Media covers almost all important problems of the interaction of different types of surface acoustic waves with surface inhomogeneities. The problems of surface acoustic wave interaction with periodic topographic gratings widely used in filters and resonators are under careful consideration. The most important results of surface wave scattering by local defects such as grooves, random roughness, elastic wedges are given. Different theoretical approaches and practical rules for solving the surface wave problems are presented |
