TitleSite Symmetry in Crystals : Theory and Applications
Author(s)Evarestov, Robert A;Smirnov, Vyacheslav P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1997.
DescriptionXIV, 282 p. 5 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteSite Symmetry in Crystals is the first comprehensive account of the group-theoretical aspects of the site (local) symmetry approach to the study of crystalline solids. The efficiency of this approach, which is based on the concepts of simple induced and band representations of space groups, is demonstrated by considering newly developed applications to electron surface states, point defects, symmetry analysis in lattice dynamics, the theory of second-order phase transitions, and magnetically ordered and non-rigid crystals. Tables of simple induced respresentations are given for the 24 most common space groups, allowing the rapid analysis of electron and phonon states in complex crystals with many atoms in the unit cell

TitleChemistry and Physics of Solid Surfaces VII
Author(s)Vanselow, Ralf;Howe, Russell F
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988.
DescriptionXVII, 616 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains review articles written by the invited speakers at the eighth International Summer Institute in Surface Science (ISISS 1987), held at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in August of 1987. During the course of ISISS, invited speakers, all internationally recognized experts in the various fields of surface science, present tutorial review lectures. In addition, these experts are asked to write review articles on their lecture topic. Former ISISS speakers serve as advisors concerning the selection of speakers and lecture topics. Em?? phasis is given to those areas which have not been covered in depth by recent Summer Institutes, as well as to areas which have recently gained in significance and in which important progress has been made. Because of space limitations, no individual volume of Chemistry and Physics of Solid Surfaces can possibly cover the whole area of modem surface science, or even give a complete survey of recent pro?? gress in the field. However, an attempt is made to present a balanced overview in the series as a whole. With its comprehensive literature references and extensive subject indices, this series has become a valu?? able resource for experts and students alike. The collected articles, which stress particularly the gas-solid interface, have been published under the following titles: Surface Science: Recent Progress and Perspectives, Crit. Rev. Solid State Sci. 4, 125-559 (1974) Chemistry and Physics of Solid Surfaces, Vols. I, II, and III (CRC Press Boca Raton, FL 1976, 1979, and 1982); Vols

TitleInterface Effects in Elastic Wave Scattering
Author(s)Bogan, Samuel D;Hinders, Mark K
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1994.
DescriptionXII, 182 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe authors study dynamical effects of incident compressional and distortional elastic waves on a layer of planar, cylindrical, or spherical geometry, especially focusing on the stress fields surrounding the layer. These results are derived from the exact solutions for elastic wave scattering from such interfaces developped in the first part of the book. Comparisons of numerical solutions of special problems with the analytical solutions are given and it is shown how the latter help to simplify the numerical treatment. The material presented in this monograph will help in developing composite materials with improved chemical and physical properties and in non-destructive testing of such materials. Engineers, physicists, and workers in applied mathematics will welcome this well written text. It may also be used for additional reading in a course on elasto-mechanics

TitleSite Symmetry in Crystals : Theory and Applications
Author(s)Evarestov, Robert A;Smirnov, Vyacheslav P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993.
DescriptionXI, 274 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe history of applications of space group theory to solid state physics goes back more than five decades. The periodicity of the lattice and the definition of a k-space were the corner-stones of this application. Prof. Volker Heine in Vol. 35 of Solid State Physics (1980) noted that, even in perfect crystals, where k-space methods are appropriate, the local properties (such as the charge densi?? ty, bond order, etc.) are defined by the local environment of one atom. Natural?? ly, "k-space methods" are not appropriate for crystals with point defects, sur?? faces and interfaces, or for amorphous materials. In such cases the real-space approach favored by chemists to describe molecules has turned out to be very useful. To span the gulf between the k-space and real space methods it is helpful to recall that atoms in crystalline solids possess a site symmetry defined by the symmetry of the local environment of the atom occupying the site. The site symmetry concept is familiar to crystallographers and commonly used by them in the description of crystalline structures. However, in the application of group theory to solid state physics problems, the site symmetry approach has been used only for the last ten to fifteen years. In our book Methods oj Group Theory in the Quantum Chemistry oj Solids published in Russian in 1987 by Leningrad University Press we gave the first results of this application to the theory of electronic structure of crystals

TitleHelium Atom Scattering from Surfaces
Author(s)Hulpke, E
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992.
DescriptionXIV, 324 p : online resource
Abstract NoteHigh resolution helium atom scattering can be applied to study a number of interesting properties of solid surfaces with great sensitivity and accuracy. This book treats in detail experimental and theoretical aspects ofthis method as well as all current applications in surface science. The individual chapters - all written by experts in the field - are devoted to the investigation of surface structure, defect shapes and concentrations, the interaction potential, collective and localized surface vibrations at low energies, phase transitions and surface diffusion. Over the past decade helium atom scattering has gained widespread recognitionwithin the surface science community. Points in its favour are comprehensiveunderstanding of the scattering theory and the availability of well-tested approximation to the rigorous theory. This book will be invaluable to surface scientists wishing to make an informed judgement on the actual and potential capabilities of this technique and its results

TitlePhysics of Amphiphilic Layers : Proceedings of the Workshop, Les Houches, France February 10???19, 1987
Author(s)Meunier, Jacques;Langevin, Dominique;Boccara, Nino
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987.
DescriptionXI, 399 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAmphiphilic layers play essential roles in the behaviour of a great variety of disperse systems such as micelles, microemulsions and vesicles. They can also exist as isolated mono- or bilayers, or constitute extended liquid crystalline structures. Although the properties of these different systems may at first sight seem unrelated, theoretical interpretations of them depend on several common concepts. This was the reason for bringing together scientists working in this area for the International Winter School on the Physics of Amphiphilic Layers, which was held at Les Houches, 10-18 February, 1987. The topics treated in the proceedings volume are mono- and bilayers, interactive forces between layers (with special emphasis on steric forces), ordered structures (in particular swollen lamellar phases and defects), vesicles, micelles (including polymer-like systems), microemulsions (especially random bicontinuous structures) and porous media. The importance of thermal fluctuations in the amphiphilic layers is stressed. Recent results are presented and literature references allow readers not familiar with the subject to find any background information they require

TitleTwo-Dimensional Electron Systems : on Helium and other Cryogenic Substrates
Author(s)Andrei, E.Y
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionX, 398 p : online resource
Abstract NoteRecent studies on two-dimensional systems have led to new insights into the fascinating interplay between physical properties and dimensionality. Many of these ideas have emerged from work on electrons bound to the surface of a weakly polarizable substrate such as liquid helium or solid hydrogen. The research on this subject continues to be at the forefront of modern condensed matter physics because of its fundamental simplicity as well as its connection to technologically useful devices. This book is the first comprehensive overview of experimental and theoretical research in this exciting field. It is intended to provide a coherent introduction for graduate students and non-experts, while at the same time serving as a reference source for active researchers in the field. The chapters are written by individuals who made significant contributions and cover a variety of specialized topics. These include the origin of the surface states, tunneling and magneto-tunneling out of these states, the phase diagram, collective excitations, transport and magneto-transport
