TitleVLSI Signal Processing Technology
Author(s)Bayoumi, Magdy A;Swartzlander, E
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1994.
DescriptionXIII, 234 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is the first in a set of forthcoming books focussed on state-of-the-art development in the VLSI Signal Processing area. It is a response to the tremendous research activities taking place in that field. These activities have been driven by two factors: the dramatic increase in demand for high speed signal processing, especially in consumer elec?? tronics, and the evolving microelectronic technologies. The available technology has always been one of the main factors in determining al?? gorithms, architectures, and design strategies to be followed. With every new technology, signal processing systems go through many changes in concepts, design methods, and implementation. The goal of this book is to introduce the reader to the main features of VLSI Signal Processing and the ongoing developments in this area. The focus of this book is on: ??? Current developments in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) pro?? cessors and architectures - several examples and case studies of existing DSP chips are discussed in Chapter 1. ??? Features and requirements of image and video signal processing architectures - both applications specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and programmable image processors are studied in Chapter 2. ??? New market areas for signal processing - especially in consumer electronics such as multimedia, teleconferencing, and movie on demand. ??? Impact of arithmetic circuitry on the performance of DSP pro?? cessors - several topics are discussed in Chapter 3 such as: number representation, arithmetic algorithms and circuits, and implementa?? tion

TitleSea Surface Sound : Natural Mechanisms of Surface Generated Noise in the Ocean
Author(s)Kerman, B.R
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1988.
Description652 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn its relentless pursuit of further knowledge, science tends to compartmentalize. Over the years the pursuit of What might be called geophysical acoustics of the sea-surface has languished. This has occured even through there are well-developed and active research programs in underwater acoustics, ocean hydrodynamics, cloud and precipitation physics, and ice mechanics - to name a few - as well as a history of engineering expertise built on these scientific fields. It remained to create a convergence, a dialogue across disciplines, of mutual benefit. The central theme of the Lerici workshop, perhaps overly simplified, was 'What are the mechanisms causing ambient noise at the upper surface of the ocean?' What could hydrodynamicists contribute to a better understanding of breaking wave dynamics, bubble production, ocean wave dynamics, or near-surface turbulence for the benefit of the underwater acoustics community? What further insights could fluid dynamicists gain by including acoustic measurements in their repertoire of instrumentation? While every attendee will have his or her percep?? tions of details, it was universally agreed that a valuable step had been taken to bring together two mature disciplines and that significant co-operative studies would undoubtedly follow. The scope of the workshop was enlarged beyond its original intent to also include the question of ice-noise generation. The success of this decision can be seen in high quality of the presentations. the contribution of its disciples in the other workshop discussions and the heightened awareness and interest of we other novices

TitleAspects of Signal Processing With Emphasis on Underwater Acoustics, Part 2 : Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Portovenere, La Spezia, Italy 30 August???11 September 1976
Author(s)Tacconi, G
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1977.
DescriptionXI, 387 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis paper describes the results of current research at DREA in which techniques of optimum array processing are being applied to active sonar. We are presenting these results at the Advanced Study Institute in order to illustrate some actual applications for such processing and to point out some of the practical considerations which arise in real systems. In particular, the paper concerns the problems which arise when the individual sensor elements have a complicated directivity pattern themselves. This is a common phenomenon in active systems where the receiving sensors are complex resonant structures and are housed in a dome or towed body presenting various baffling and diffraction effects. Most treatments of array processing consider ideal elements which have well behaved directivity properties and are transparent to the field. The results of this paper show that where these properties are not met, careful in situ array measurements are required, and even with such measurements practical array gains may not be as good as predictions based on ideal sensors

TitleAspects of Signal Processing : With Emphasis on Underwater Acoustics Part 1 Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Portovenere, La Spezia, Italy 30 August???11 September 1976
Author(s)Tacconi, G
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1977.
DescriptionXXVI, 400 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe summer school held in Portovenere followed a tutorial format with the purpose of familiarizing postdoctoral or postgraduate students in the basic theories and up-to-date applications of present knowledge. Although, from a teaching point of view, a certain areount of overlapping is always useful, in order to avoid excessive duplication direct contact between lecturers expert in the same subject was encouraged during the preparation phase. In recent years computer facilities and theoretical implementa?? tion have considerably increased the possibility of solving problems relating to signal detection in noise. Any type of communication may take advantage of signal processing principles, including any type of physical measurement that can be considered as a non-semantic and/or quasi-semantic communication. Since signal processing techniques are common to many branches of science (telecommunications, radar, sonar, seismology, geophysics, nuclear research, space research and others), the advanced and sophisticated levels reached singularly in anyone of them could be used to the advantage of the others. In particular, underwater acoustics is a discipline which, to some extent, represents a practical general model that has permitted the development of signal processing techniques suitable to meet data reduction and interpretation needs of other branches of science. This ASI consequently underlined the inter-disciplinarity of signal proces?? sing in order that the principles of outstanding methods developed in one field may be adapted to others

TitleProbabilistic and Stochastic Methods in Analysis, with Applications
Author(s)Byrnes, J.S;Hargreaves, Kathryn A;Berry, Karl
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1992.
DescriptionXI, 699 p : online resource
Abstract NoteProbability has been an important part of mathematics for more than three centuries. Moreover, its importance has grown in recent decades, since the computing power now widely available has allowed probabilistic and stochastic techniques to attack problems such as speech and image processing, geophysical exploration, radar, sonar, etc. -- all of which are covered here. The book contains three exceptionally clear expositions on wavelets, frames and their applications. A further extremely active current research area, well covered here, is the relation between probability and partial differential equations, including probabilistic representations of solutions to elliptic and parabolic PDEs. New approaches, such as the PDE method for large deviation problems, and stochastic optimal control and filtering theory, are beginning to yield their secrets. Another topic dealt with is the application of probabilistic techniques to mathematical analysis. Finally, there are clear explanations of normal numbers and dynamic systems, and the influence of probability on our daily lives

TitleAcoustics Dictionary : Quadrilingual: English, German, French, Dutch
Author(s)Reichardt, W
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1983.
Description109 p : online resource
Abstract NoteInterest in acoustics continues to increase. Although this branch of science was concerned primarily with the promotion of qualitative and quantitative sound transmission until a few decades ago, emphasis is currently placed also on the limitation of sound nuisance and, by extension, the setting of boundaries for permissible sound levels in places \vhere people are found. This last aspect in particular is exercising more and more influence on the design of buildings and machines, and in town and country planning. In addition, sound vibrations, because of their physical characteristics, are being used increasingly in disparate disciplines such as navigation, medical investigation and non?? destructive materials research. The flood of publications resulting from this increased interest in acoustics has led to a growing number of people being confronted with terminology which had until quite re?? cently only been used by a relatively small group of specialists and had remained largely unknown as a result. This four language dictionary, based on 'W. Reichardt, Technische Akustik; Berlin 1979', has been compiled to make not only this literature but also the nomenclature of equipment and instructions for their use accessible to the specialist and the interested layman

TitleModelling and Application of Stochastic Processes
Author(s)Desai, Uday B
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1986.
DescriptionXIV, 288 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe subject of modelling and application of stochastic processes is too vast to be exhausted in a single volume. In this book, attention is focused on a small subset of this vast subject. The primary emphasis is on realization and approximation of stochastic systems. Recently there has been considerable interest in the stochastic realization problem, and hence, an attempt has been made here to collect in one place some of the more recent approaches and algorithms for solving the stochastic realiza?? tion problem. Various different approaches for realizing linear minimum-phase systems, linear nonminimum-phase systems, and bilinear systems are presented. These approaches range from time-domain methods to spectral-domain methods. An overview of the chapter contents briefly describes these approaches. Also, in most of these chapters special attention is given to the problem of developing numerically ef?? ficient algorithms for obtaining reduced-order (approximate) stochastic realizations. On the application side, chapters on use of Markov random fields for modelling and analyzing image signals, use of complementary models for the smoothing problem with missing data, and nonlinear estimation are included. Chapter 1 by Klein and Dickinson develops the nested orthogonal state space realization for ARMA processes. As suggested by the name, nested orthogonal realizations possess two key properties; (i) the state variables are orthogonal, and (ii) the system matrices for the (n + l)st order realization contain as their "upper" n-th order blocks the system matrices from the n-th order realization (nesting property)

TitleDiscrete H??? Optimization : With Applications in Signal Processing and Control Systems
Author(s)Chui, Charles K;Chen, Guanrong
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1997.
DescriptionXIII, 261 p : online resource
Abstract NoteDiscrete H?? Optimization is concerned with the study of H?? optimization for digital signal processing and discrete-time control systems. The first three chapters present the basic theory and standard methods in digital filtering and systems from the frequency-domain approach, followed by a discussion of the general theory of approximation in Hardy spaces. AAK theory is introduced, first for finite-rank operators and then more generally, before being extended to the multi-input/multi-output setting. This mathematically rigorous book is self-contained and suitable for self-study. The advanced mathermatical results derived here are applicabel to digital control systems and digital filtering

TitleDiscrete Transforms
Author(s)Firth, J.M
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1992.
Description187 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe analysis of signals and systems using transform methods is a very important aspect of the examination of processes and problems in an increasingly wide range of applications. Whereas the initial impetus in the development of methods appropriate for handling discrete sets of data occurred mainly in an electrical engineering context (for example in the design of digital filters), the same techniques are in use in such disciplines as cardiology, optics, speech analysis and management, as well as in other branches of science and engineering. This text is aimed at a readership whose mathematical background includes some acquaintance with complex numbers, linear differen?? tial equations, matrix algebra, and series. Specifically, a familiarity with Fourier series (in trigonometric and exponential forms) is assumed, and an exposure to the concept of a continuous integral transform is desirable. Such a background can be expected, for example, on completion of the first year of a science or engineering degree course in which transform techniques will have a significant application. In other disciplines the readership will be past the second year undergraduate stage. In either case, the text is also intended for earlier graduates whose degree courses did not include this type of material and who now find themselves, in a professional capacity, requiring a knowledge of discrete transform methods

TitleAcoustic Signal Processing for Ocean Exploration
Author(s)Moura, J.M.F;Lourtie, Isabel M.G
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993.
DescriptionXV, 676 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAcoustic Signal Processing for Ocean Explortion has two major goals: (i) to present signal processing algorithms that take into account the models of acoustic propagation in the ocean and; (ii) to give a perspective of the broad set of techniques, problems, and applications arising in ocean exploration. The book discusses related issues and problems focused in model based acoustic signal processing methods. Besides addressing the problem of the propagation of acoustics in the ocean, it presents relevant acoustic signal processing methods like matched field processing, array processing, and localization and detection techniques. These more traditional contexts are herein enlarged to include imaging and mapping, and new signal representation models like time/frequency and wavelet transforms. Several applied aspects of these topics, such as the application of acoustics to fisheries, sea floor swath mapping by swath bathymetry and side scan sonar, autonomous underwater vehicles and communications in underwater are also considered
