Abstract NoteThe International Workshop on Turbulent Combustion was held September 14-15, 2000, at the Nagoya Institute of Technology, to review the present status of turbu?? lent combustion studies. Reviews were presented by Prof. F. A. Williams of the Uni?? versity of California, San Diego; Prof. Ken Bray of the University of Cambridge; and Prof. Jay Gore of Purdue University. Dr. Howard Baum of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and Dr. Jim McDonough of the University of Ken?? tucky participated in the discussion. Some ten papers, describing the latest findings of Japanese studies in this field, were given at the meeting. About half of these studies are supported by a national project, the Open and Integrated Research Pro?? gram, Creation of New Functionalized Thermo-Fluid Systems by Turbulence Con?? trol, that started only recently under the sponsorship of the Science and Technology Agency of Japan. The meeting was a great success and gave impetus and a sense of perspective to young Japanese researchers through the excellent reviews and valu?? able comments their work received. I believe that this kind of open discussion is indispensable for any project to produce a good outcome, and I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all who participated in the meeting. Finally, I would like to express my special thanks to Prof. Tatsuya Hasegawa of the Nagoya Institute of Technology, Prof. Akira Yoshida of Tokyo Denki University, Prof

TitleThe Application of Econophysics : Proceedings of the Second Nikkei Econophysics Symposium
Author(s)Takayasu, Hideki
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 2004.
DescriptionX, 343 p : online resource
Abstract NoteEconophysics is a newborn field of science bridging economics and physics. A special feature of this new science is the data analysis of high-precision market data. In economics arbitrage opportunity is strictly denied; however, by observing high-precision data we can prove the existence of arbitrage opportunity. Also, financial technology neglects the possibility of market prediction; however, in this book you can find many examples of predicted events. There are other surprising findings. This volume is the proceedings of a workshop on "application of econophysics" at which leading international researchers discussed their most recent results

TitleCompetitive-cum-Cooperative Interfirm Relations and Dynamics in the Japanese Semiconductor Industry
Author(s)Okada, Yoshitaka
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 2000.
DescriptionXVIII, 238 p : online resource
Abstract NoteJapanese semiconductor firms are well known for obtaining dynamics in a short period of time and achieving even global leadership. A significant portion of their success are attributable to cooperative interfirm relations and the development of intermediate organizational structure based on long-term relationship between firms. The purpose of this book is to explain how interfirm relations contributed to their dynamics during the golden age of the semiconductor industry. Meanwhile this book clarifies the real source of dynamics in interfirm relations and how the firms have interacted. The author concludes that the competitive-cum-cooperative (CCC) interfirm interaction are observed. Quantitative and qualitative findings show that firms enjoy not only flexible cooperation based synergy effects, but also dynamics market-like effects by creating competition among partners through CCC interaction

TitleAdS/CFT Duality User Guide
Author(s)Natsuume, Makoto
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 2015.
DescriptionXI, 294 p. 75 illus., 11 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book describes applications of the AdS/CFT duality to the "real world." The AdS/CFT duality is an idea that originated from string theory and is a powerful tool for analyzing strongly-coupled gauge theories using classical gravitational theories. In recent years, it has been shown that one prediction of AdS/CFT is indeed close to the experimental result of the real quark???gluon plasma. Since then, the AdS/CFT duality has been applied to various fields of physics; examples are QCD, nuclear physics, condensed-matter physics, and nonequilibrium physics. The aim of this book is to provide background materials such as string theory, black holes, nuclear physics, condensed-matter physics, and nonequilibrium physics as well as key applications of the AdS/CFT duality in a single volume. The emphasis throughout the book is on a pedagogical and intuitive approach focusing on the underlying physical concepts. It also includes step-by-step computations for important results, which are useful for beginners. This book will be a valuable reference work for graduate students and researchers in particle physics, general relativity, nuclear physics, nonequilibrium physics, and condensed-matter physics.

TitleDouble Chooz and Reactor Neutrino Oscillation : ??_13 Improvement and First Effective ??m^2_31 Measurement
Author(s)Junqueira de Castro Bezerra, Thiago
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 2015.
DescriptionXVIII, 190 p. 144 illus., 46 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is based on the author???s work at the Double Chooz Experiment, from 2010 to 2013, the goal of which was to search for electronic anti-neutrino disappearance close to nuclear power plant facilities as a result of neutrino oscillation. Starting with a brief review of neutrino oscillation and the most important past experimental findings in this field, the author subsequently provides a full and detailed description of a neutrino detector, from simulation aspects to detection principles, as well as the data analysis procedure used to extract the oscillation parameters. The main results in this book are 1) an improvement on the mixing angle, ??13, uncertainty by combining two data-sets from neutrino event selection: neutron capture on gadolinium and on hydrogen; and 2) the first measurement of the effective squared mass difference by combining the current reactor neutrino experimental data from Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO and taking advantage of their different reactor-to-detector distances. The author explains how these methods of combining data can be used to??estimate these two values. Each method results in the best possible sensitivity for the oscillation parameters with regard to reactor neutrinos. They can be used as a standard method on the latest data releases from the current experiments

TitleDirac Spectra in Dense QCD
Author(s)Kanazawa, Takuya
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 2013.
DescriptionXIV, 138 p : online resource
Abstract NoteGaining a theoretical understanding of the properties of ultra-relativistic dense matter has been one of the most important and challenging goals in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this thesis, the author analyzes dense quark matter in QCD with gauge group SU(2) using low-energy effective theoretical techniques and elucidates a novel connection between statistical properties of the Dirac operator spectrum at high baryon chemical potential and a special class of random matrix theories. This work can be viewed as an extension of a similar correspondence?? between QCD and matrix models which was previously known only for infinitesimal chemical potentials. In future numerical simulations of dense matter the analytical results reported here are expected to serve as a useful tool to extract physical observables such as the BCS gap from numerical data on the Dirac spectrum

TitleThe Black Hole-Neutron Star Binary Merger in Full General Relativity : Dependence on Neutron Star Equations of State
Author(s)Kyutoku, Koutarou
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 2013.
DescriptionXIII, 178 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis presents a systematic study of the orbital evolution, gravitational wave radiation, and merger remnant of the black hole???neutron star binary merger in full general relativity for the first time. Numerical-relativity simulations are performed using an adaptive mesh refinement code, SimulAtor for Compact objects in Relativistic Astrophysics (SACRA), which adopts a wide variety of zero-temperature equations of state for the neutron star matter. ?? Gravitational waves provide us with quantitative information on the neutron star compactness and equation of state via the cutoff frequency in the spectra, if tidal disruption of the neutron star occurs before the binary merges. The cutoff frequency will be observed by next-generation laser interferometric ground-based gravitational wave detectors, such as Advanced LIGO, Advanced VIRGO, and KAGRA. ?? The author has also determined that the mass of remnant disks are sufficient for the remnant black hole accretion disk to become a progenitor of short-hard gamma ray bursts accompanied by tidal disruptions and suggests that overspinning black holes may not be formed after the merger of even an extremely spinning black hole and an irrotational neutron star

TitleElectricity and Magnetism : New Formulation by Introduction of Superconductivity
Author(s)Matsushita, Teruo
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 2014.
DescriptionXIII, 384 p. 286 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe author introduces the concept that superconductivity can establish a perfect formalism of electricity and magnetism. The correspondence of conductors that exhibit perfect electrostatic shielding (E=0) in the static condition and superconductors that show perfect diamagnetism (B=0) is given to help readers understand the relationship between electricity and magnetism. Another helpful aspect with the introduction of the superconductivity feature perfect diamagnetism is that the correspondence in the development of the expression of magnetic energy and electric energy is clearly shown. Additionally, the basic mathematical operation and proofs are shown in an appendix, and there is full use of examples and exercises in each chapter with thorough answers

TitleSuzaku Studies of White Dwarf Stars and the Galactic X-ray Background Emission
Author(s)Yuasa, Takayuki
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 2013.
DescriptionXV, 154 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis presents a study of the origin of an apparently extended X-ray emission associated with the Galactic ridge. The study was carried out with broadband spectra obtained from mapping observations in the Galactic bulge region conducted in 2005???2010 by the Suzaku space X-ray observatory. The spectra were analyzed with a newly constructed X-ray spectral model of an accreting white dwarf binary that is one of the proposed candidate stars for the origin of the Galactic ridge emission in the higher energy band. Fitting of the observed Galactic ridge spectra with the model showed that there is another spectral component that fills the gap between the observed X-ray flux and the component expected from the accreting white dwarf spectral model in the lower energy band. This additional soft spectral component was nicely explained by an X-ray spectral model of normal stars. The result, together with previously reported high-resolution imaging results, strongly supports the idea that the Galactic ridge X-ray emission is an assembly of dim, discrete X-ray point sources
