TitleHandbook of Behavioral Group Therapy
Author(s)Upper, Dennis;Ross, Steven M
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1985.
DescriptionXII, 513 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn 1977, the current editors contributed a review article on behavioral group therapy to a volume of Hersen, Miller, and Eisler's Progress in Behavior Modi?? fication series (1977). At that time we noted that, despite the advantages to both clinicians and clients of conducting behavioral treatments in groups, clinical developments and research in this area were still at a relatively rudimen?? tary level. The majority of studies in the behavioral group therapy literature we reviewed reported the direct transfer of an individual behavior therapy pro?? cedure, such as systematic desensitization, to a group of clients with homoge?? neous problems, such as snake phobia or test anxiety. Groups were used in many studies merely to generate sufficient numbers of subjects to allow various types of interventions to be compared, rather than to examine group process variables per se. Only a limited amount of attention had been given to whether these group interaction variables (such as group discussion, sharing ideas and feelings, and mutual feedback and reinforcement) might enhance individually oriented procedures applied in a group. The 8 years since this original chapter was written have seen a significant growth in both the breadth and depth of clinical research and work in the behavioral group therapy field. This growth was documented in part in a three?? volume series on behavioral group therapy by the current editors (Upper & Ross, 1979, 1980, 1981)

TitleIntroduction to Scientific Psychology
Author(s)Schlinger, Henry D. Jr;Poling, Alan
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1998.
DescriptionXIX, 388 p : online resource
Abstract NoteWe humans are faced with an interesting problem: That which we think we un?? derstand the most-our own behavior-we probably understand the least. On the eve of a new millennium. the planet is beset by a host of problems that are. for the most part. caused by human behavior. Ironically. although it seems that the greatest impact of our behavior is on the planet and its other inhabitants. we may actually be threatening our own future the most. For example. we have caused untold harm to the air we breathe. to the water we drink. and. by exten?? sion. to much of the food we eat. More important perhaps. we have created a so?? ciety in which. among other things. many people are anxious and depressed. young women starve themselves. and alcohol and cigarette use are responsible for hundreds of thousands of cases of illness and death every year. And humans still murder one another at an astounding rate. while at the same time continu?? ing to affirm the value of human life. At a time when it is critical that our chil?? dren become educated. more and more children are not learning the basic skills they will need to think logically so that they can begin to solve the world's problems. The question may be not "Can the planet survive?" but. rather. "Can we humans survive and change our own destructive actions?" Although many scholars. philosophers

TitleThe Scientific Practice of Professional Psychology
Author(s)Trierweiler, Steven J;Stricker, George
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1998.
DescriptionXI, 312 p : online resource
Abstract NoteA workable vision of scientific practice has proven to be an elusive, if laudable, goal for professional psychology. The field cannot be faulted for failing to seek scientific wisdom, but it has been slow to integrate that wisdom fully with the wisdom of practice. This has proven to be a major oversight for, despite psychology's long?? if the standing commitment to science, practitioners are unlikely to think scientifically methods and products of science are described in ways that make it impossible to do so. Unfortunately, the rhetoric of science too often has done just that: So focused has it been on the problem of distinguishing good science from bad that it has inadvertently defeated any hope of a practical science developing in our field. We offer one remedy for this situation: This book is about scientific thinking for the professional psychologist. Specifically, it is a primer on the application of scientific logic to professional practice. We argue that the professional needs a more straightforward and realistic scientific identity than heretofore has been available. The professional consciously must become a local clinical scientist, bringing all the power of scientific thought to the specifics of the clinical situation. Contrary to forces in psychology that promote uncritical acceptance of science as given by academic researchers or, alternatively, that encourage criticism and ultimate disregard of the scientific endeavor, we call for a redoubling of efforts to incorporate scientific thought into practical professional inquiry

TitleFamily Assessment: Rationale, Methods and Future Directions
Author(s)Jacob, Theodore;Tennenbaum, Daniel L
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1988.
DescriptionXI, 208 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe purpose of this book is to review existing and developing family assessment methods relevant to the study of psycho?? pathology. It is our intention not only to inform clinical re?? searchers of the many valuable family assessment methods that are available, but also to encourage the incorporation of such procedures into future research efforts. In so doing, we believe that our understanding of the etiology, course, treatment, and prevention of adult and childhood disorders will be greatly enriched. The book begins with an overview of the larger social and intellectual forces which have led to the current interest in study?? ing family influences on psychopathology in children and adoles?? cence. For each "stream of influence," we attempt to highlight theoretical and methodological contributions relevant to the fami?? ly's role in the etiology, exacerbation, and treatment of childhood disorders. Next, a framework for classifying family measurement procedures is introduced in which three major dimensions are emphasized: unit of analysis, source of data, and construct as?? sessed. The third and most important chapter provides detailed reviews of a selected number of methods within each of the major groupings that have been delimited, references and brief descrip?? tions of other measures that cannot be reviewed in detail, and a discussion of the promising and developing techniques that are known to the authors

TitleSevere Behavior Disorders in the Mentally Retarded : Nondrug Approaches to Treatment
Author(s)Barrett, Rowland P
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1986.
DescriptionXXII, 404 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIt is well known that behavior problems are a salient characteristic of children and adults with mental retardation. That is not to say that all persons with mental retardation experience behavior disorders; how?? ever, most studies indicate that the incidence of emotional disturbance in this population is four to six times greater than that observed in similar intellectually nonhandicapped children and adults. It is equally well known that the principal form of treatment accorded clients with mental retardation and behavior disorders is pharmacotherapy or the prescrip?? tion of behavior modifying drugs. Recent studies show that 6 out of every 10 individuals with mental retardation have been prescribed drugs as treatment for disorders of emotion or behavior. Unfortunately, further studies indicate that only one or 2 out of every 10 clients receiving medication are determined to be "responders," such that some thera?? peutic benefit is derived from their drug treatment. As noted by the title, the single major thrust of this volume is to review approaches to the treatment of behavior disorders in persons with mental retardation from a nondrug perspective. This requires the presentation of a wide range of material on treatment: basic behavior modification programming, cognitive-behavioral strategies, habilitative approaches, counseling and psychotherapy, designing therapeutic living environments, managing medical factors bearing relevance to emotional illness, intervening with families, training special education teachers and direct care staff, and supplying information on the client's rights to obtain treatment in the least restrictive and least intrusive manner

TitleCasebook of the Brief Psychotherapies
Author(s)Wells, Richard A;Giannetti, Vincent J
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1993.
DescriptionXVI, 394 p : online resource
Abstract NoteFollowing the publication of the Handbook of the Brief Psychotherapies (Wells & Giannetti, 1990), the editors began to conceptualize the idea of a collection of case studies encompassing a number of the commonly en?? countered clinical problems that have been treated with such ap?? proaches. The Casebook of the Brief Psychotherapies is the result. The Case?? book details clinical interventions with client populations as diverse as substance abusers, torture victims, the physically handicapped and other exceptional groups, and the economically disadvantaged with emotional and behavioral problems, as well as individuals experiencing sexual dysfunction or eating disorders. In addition, topics such as be?? reavement, depression, anger, and many crucial aspects of marital and family therapy are discussed by eminent clinical practitioners. Although the cases draw heavily upon cognitive behavioral and strategic structural formulations, psychodynamic, interpersonal, and experiential ap?? proaches are also included. The Casebook is clinically oriented, with a minimum of theory. Am?? ple case material and commentary allow the reader to experience direct?? ly the application of brief therapy to specific client problems. What emerges from this compendium of approaches and problems is a tap?? estry of action-oriented, problem-solving, skill-building, rational ap?? proaches to therapy that balance the client's ability to change with the demands and limits of time

TitleGuidebook for Clinical Psychology Interns
Author(s)Zammit, Gary K;Hull, James W
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1995.
DescriptionXV, 226 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe internship is the capstone experience of professional education and training preparatory for the application of psychology in health and human services. It is analagous for the practice of psychology to what the doctoral dissertation represents in the student's development as a scholar. At its best, the internship should be viewed as far more than simply a require?? ment for one's degree or licensure, a rite de passage for entry into the profes?? sion. Rather, it should be regarded by students and faculty alike as a rich opportunity for personal and professional growth, the opportunity to as?? sess and even rethink one's assumptions about human behavior and psy?? chological problems in the context of different client populations, types of problems addressed, and psychological service system environments. In articulating the first formal guidelines for the accreditation of grad?? uate training programs in clinical psychology, a committee of the American Psychological Association, comprised of distinguished psychologists of their day, asked, "What are the aims of a psychological internship?" The committee replied to that question as follows: Underlying all of its aims is the principle . . . that the knowledge es?? sential to the practice of clinical psychology cannot be obtained solely from books, lectures, or any other devices which merely provide infor?? mation about people or about ways of studying them
