TitleThe Science of Time 2016 : Time in Astronomy & Society, Past, Present and Future
Author(s)Arias, Elisa Felicitas;Combrinck, Ludwig;Gabor, Pavel;Hohenkerk, Catherine;Seidelmann, P. Kenneth
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionX, 394 p. 169 illus., 136 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe uses of time in astronomy - from pointing telescopes, coordinating and processing observations, predicting ephemerides, cultures, religious practices, history, businesses, determining Earth orientation, analyzing time-series data and in many other ways - represent a broad sample of how time is used throughout human society and in space. Time and its reciprocal, frequency, is the most accurately measurable quantity and often an important path to the frontiers of science. But the future of timekeeping is changing with the development of optical frequency standards and the resulting challenges of distributing time at ever higher precision, with the possibility of timescales based on pulsars, and with the inclusion of higher-order relativistic effects. The definition of the second will likely be changed before the end of this decade, and its realization will increase in accuracy; the definition of the day is no longer obvious. The variability of the Earth's rotation presents challenges of understanding and prediction. In this symposium speakers took a closer look at time in astronomy, other sciences, cultures, and business as a defining element of modern civilization. The symposium aimed to set the stage for future timekeeping standards, infrastructure, and engineering best practices for astronomers and the broader society. At the same time the program was cognizant of the rich history from Harrison's chronometer to today's atomic clocks and pulsar observations. The theoreticians and engineers of time were brought together with the educators and historians of science, enriching the understanding of time among both experts and the public

TitleLuminosity Measurement at the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment of the LHC
Author(s)Karacheban, Olena
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXVI, 142 p. 90 illus., 74 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book describes the application of a novel technology for beam instrumentation and luminosity measurement and first results on a cutting edge technology potentially to be used after the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider to higher luminosity. It presents a unique diamond-based luminometer with a detailed performance study. The online bunch-by-bunch luminosity measurements made provide an invaluable feedback to the Collider for beam optimisation and the understanding of the beam dynamics. The precision of the luminosity measurement is crucial for all physics analyses. This book highlights the Van der Meer method, which is used for the calibration of the luminometers of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment, and describes the estimate of systematic uncertainties, e.g. due to radiation damage of sensors and electronics and uncertainties of beam parameters. For the future high-luminosity upgrade of the collider, sapphire sensors are investigated in a test beam. It is demonstrated for the first time that sapphire sensors can be used as single particle detectors. A model for the charge transport in sapphire is developed and successfully applied

TitlePhase Diagram and Magnetic Excitations of BaFe2-xNixAs2: A Neutron Scattering Study
Author(s)Lu, Xingye
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2017.
DescriptionXII, 120 p. 55 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book studies the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of, as well as magnetic excitations in, high-temperature BaFe2-xNixAs2 superconductors using neutron diffraction and neutron spectroscopic methods. It describes the precise determination of the phase diagram of BaFe2-xNixAs2, which demonstrates strong magnetoelastic coupling and avoided quantum criticality driven by short-range incommensurate antiferromagnetic order, showing cluster spin glass behavior. It also identifies strong nematic spin correlations in the tetragonal state of uniaxial strained BaFe2-xNixAs2. The nematic correlations have similar temperature and doping dependence as resistivity anisotropy in detwinned samples, which suggests that they are intimately connected. Lastly, it investigates doping evolution of magnetic excitations in overdoped BaFe2-xNixAs2 and discusses the links with superconductivity. This book includes detailed neutron scattering results on BaFe2-xNixAs2 and an introduction to neutron scattering techniques, making it a useful guide for readers pursuing related research

TitleDevelopment of 15 Micron Cutoff Wavelength HgCdTe Detector Arrays for Astronomy
Author(s)Cabrera, Mario
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVII, 121 p. 71 illus., 44 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis describes advances in the understanding of HgCdTe detectors. While long wave (15 ??m) infrared detectors HgCdTe detectors have been developed for military use under high background irradiance, these arrays had not previously been developed for astronomical use where the background irradiance is a billion times smaller. The main pitfall in developing such arrays for astronomy is the pixel dark current which plagues long wave HgCdTe. The author details work on the success of shorter wavelength development at Teledyne Imaging Sensors, carefully modeling the dark current???reverse bias voltage curves of their 10 ??m devices at a temperature of 30K, as well as the dark current???temperature curves at several reverse biases, including 250 mV. By projecting first to 13 and then 15 ??m HgCdTe growth, values of fundamental properties of the material that would minimize tunneling dark currents were determined through careful modeling of the dark current-reverse bias voltage curves, as well as the dark current-temperature curves. This analysis was borne out in the 13 ??m parts produced by Teledyne, and then further honed to produce the necessary parameters for the 15 ??m growth. The resulting 13 ??m arrays are being considered by a number of ground-based astronomy research groups
