TitleRandom Surfaces and Quantum Gravity
Author(s)Alvarez, Orlando;Marinari, Enzo;Windey, Paul
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1991.
DescriptionVIII, 407 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Cargese Workshop Random Surfaces and Quantum Gravity was held from May 27 to June 2, 1990. Little was known about string theory in the non-perturbative regime before Oetober 1989 when non-perturbative equations for the string partition functions were found by using methods based on the random triangulations of surfaees. This set of methods pro?? vides a deseription of non-eritical string theory or equivalently of the coupling of matter fields to quantum gravity in two dimensions. The Cargese meeting was very successful in that it provided the first opportunity to gather most of the active workers in the field for a fuH week of lectures and extensive informal discussions about these exeiting new developments. The main results were reviewed, recent advances were explained, new results and conjectures (which appear for the first time in these proceedings) were presented and discussed. Among the most important topics discussed at the workshop were: The relation of KdV theory to loop equations and the Virasoro algebra, new results in Liouville field theory, effective (1 + 1) dimensional theory for 2 - D quantum gravity coupled to c = 1 matter and its fermionization, proposal for a new geometrical interpretation of the string equation and possible definition of quantum Riemann surfaces, discussion of the string equation for the multi-matrix models, links with topological field theories of gravity, issues in using target space supersymmetry to define good theories, definition of the partition function via analytic continuation, new models of random surfaces

TitleNonlocality in Quantum Physics
Author(s)Grib, Andrey Anatoljevich;Rodrigues Jr., Waldyr Alves
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1999.
DescriptionX, 225 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe nonlocality phenomena exhibited by entangled quantum systems are certainly one of the most extraordinary aspects of quantum theory. This book discusses this phe?? nomenon according to several points of view, i.e., according to different interpretations of the mathematics of the quantum formalism. The several interpretations of the Copenhagen interpretation, the many worlds, the de Broglie-Bohm, quantum logics, the decohering by the environment approach and the histories approach interpretations are scrutinized and criticized in detail. Recent results on cryptography, quantum bit commitment, quantum erasers and teleportation are also presented and discussed. In preparing the book we benefited from discussions with many people, but we would like, in particular, to express our gratitude to Professor B. d'Espagnat for his useful comments and suggestions. We are grateful also to Ms. L. Gentry EI-Dash for the English revision, to Dr. 1. E. Maiorino for the production of the figures and a careful reading of the manuscript, and for the statI of Plenum for advice and for having produced a nice book. Finally, the authors thank FAPESP (contract no. I 99612657-0) for a grant making this book possible. A. A. ORIB AND W. A. RODRIGUES, JR

TitleParticle Production in Highly Excited Matter
Author(s)Gutbrod, Hans H;Rafelski, Johann
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1993.
DescriptionIX, 689 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSeven years after the first experiments in the new field of Nuclear Physics, the Highly Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics, the Nato-Advanced- Study-Institute on the 'Particle Production in Highly Excited Matter' was held from July 12 till July 24, 1992, at Il Ciocco, Castelvecchio Pascoli, near Lucca in Italy. The school took place at a mo?? ment when intensive efforts are mounted by the scientific community of Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics to meet the extraordinary challenge of the new upcoming physics opportunities. The gold beams of 10 GeV A at Brookhaven AGS have been sent to the experiments this Summer and we extent our congratulations to the persons and teams who made this possible. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven is under construction and expected to allow experiments to see collisions in the intersec?? tion regions early 1998. The lead beams at the SPS at CERN scheduled for summer 1994 are eagerly awaited by 6 large experiments, and many scientists are planning the experiments at the planned LHC with heavy ions to be turned on before the year 2000. Seen against this background of rather fierce activity, we were most delighted when NATO accepted our application for an Advanced Study Institute oriented to the main subject of this young and dynamic field of research. We are very grateful to the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO and Dr. L. DaCunha, the director of the Advanced Study Institute program for giving our community this opportunity

TitleDisorder and Fracture
Author(s)Charmet, J.C;Guyon, E;Roux, St??phane
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1990.
Description316 p : online resource
Abstract NoteFracture, and particularly brittle fracture, is a good example of an instability. For a homogeneous solid, subjected to a uniform stress field, a crack may appear anywhere in the structure once the threshold stress is reached. However, once a crack has been nucleated in some place, further damage in the solid will in most cases propagate from the initial crack, and not somewhere else in the solid. In this sense fracture is an unstable process. This property makes the process extremely sensitive to any heterogeneity present in the medium, which selects the location of the first crack nucleated. In particular, fracture appears to be very sensitive to disorder, which can favor or impede local cracks. Therefore, in most realistic cases, a good description of fracture mechanics should include the effect of disorder. Recently this need has motivated work in this direction starting from the usual description of fracture mechanics. Parallel with this first trend, statistical physics underwent a very important development in the description of disordered systems. In particular, let us mention the emergence of some "new" concepts (such as fractals, scaling laws, finite size effects, and so on) in this field. However, many models considered were rather simple and well adapted to theoretical or numerical introduction into a complex body of problems. An example of this can be found in percolation theory. This area is now rather well understood and accurately described

TitleThe Fundamental Interaction : Geometrical Trends
Author(s)Debrus, J
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1988.
DescriptionVIII, 250 p : online resource
Abstract NoteA meeting was held at the Physics Centre in Bad Honnef from Feb. 16-20, 1987 on the subject "The Fundamental Interaction: Geometrical Trends". This meeting was in the series of Physics Schools organized by the German Physical Society. The participants were mainly younger scientists and graduate students: physicists, mathematicians and astronomers from the Federal Republic of Germany; there were also participants from Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce the participants to modern methods of mathematics and field theory which are increasingly being used in current elementary particle research. An outstanding feature of the school was the fact that each lecturer really made an effort to present his material at an introductory level, which could be followed by people with the usual degree level qualifications and which, nevertheless, then led up to the level of contemporary specialized literature. We hope that the published volume will make these lectures, which taken together give a unified overview of the recent developments leading up to the current world-view in modern theoretical physics, available to a wider audience. We wish to thank the lecturers, who besides the formal lectures devoted their time to discussions with the participants throughout the duration of the School. We are also grateful to the staff of the Physics Centre for their organizational assistance, and to the participants, whose active interest made the meeting a success. The entire manuscript was efficiently typed by Manfred Krafczyk at the University of Dortmund

TitleRelativity, Supersymmetry, and Strings
Author(s)Rosenblum, A
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1990.
DescriptionVIII, 128 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe first international conference on. relativity physics and parallel computing took place February 24-28, 1986, at the International Institute of Theoretical Physics at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Before proceeding to summarize some of the main points of the conference I would like to make a few remarks about the goals of the International Institute of Theoretical Physics. The Institute undertakes frontier research in both pure and applied physics and is housed in the new physics building at Utah State University. The applied research is in solar energy and optical parallel computing. We are in the midst of building four very efficient solar collectors and, in the very near future, parts of an optical parallel computer in the Institute. The pure research is concerned with relativity physics, particle physics, condensed matter physics, quantum systems, etc. On the macroscop?? ic level, we are concerned with possible experimental tests of Einstein's General Relativity. On the microscopic level, we are interested in the unification of gravitation with the other interactions. In addition to research, the International Institute sponsors visiting scientists and en?? courages collaborations, etc

Author(s)Kayser, Rainer;Schramm, Thomas;Nieser, Lars
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992.
DescriptionXXII, 399 p : online resource
Abstract NoteOne of the most spectacular predictions of Einstein's theory of general relativity is the occurrence of gravitational lenses in our galactic system.Nowadays the mastering of the mathematics together with the technology available to astronomers allow Einstein's prediction to be confirmed. Several reviews here give the reader the chance to under- stand the basic theoretical concept of gravitational lensing and to obtain an overview of observational work. The present state of the field and latest results are given in a large number of specialized papers. Anextensive source and subject index make these proceedings valuable also as areference book for all researchers active in the field

TitleDensity-Matrix Renormalization - A New Numerical Method in Physics : Lectures of a Seminar and Workshop held at the Max-Planck-Institut f??r Physik komplexer Systeme, Dresden, Germany, August 24th to September 18th, 1998
Author(s)Peschel, Ingo;Wang, Xiaoqun;Kaulke, Matthias;Hallberg, Karen
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionXVI, 355 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book offers the first comprehensive account of the new method of density matrix renormalization. Recent years have seen enormous progress in the numerical treatment of low-dimensional quantum sytems. With this new technique, which selects a reduced set of basis states via density matrices, it has become possible to treat large systems with amazing accuracy. The method has been applied successfully to a variety of important one-dimensional problems such as spin chains, Kondo models, and correlated electron systems. Extensions to other systems and higher dimensions are currently being developed. The contributions to this book are written by leading experts in the field. The two parts contain an introduction to the subject and a review of physical applications. As a combination of advanced textbook and guide to current research the book should become a standard source for everyone interested in the topic

TitleProgress in New Cosmologies : Beyond the Big Bang
Author(s)Arp, H.C;Keys, C.R;Rudnicki, K
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1993.
DescriptionXIV, 361 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Hidden Hypotheses Behind the Big Bang It is quite unavoidable that many philosophical a priori assumptions lurk behind the debate between supporters of the Big Bang and the anti-BB camp. The same battle has been waged in physics between the determinists and the opposing viewpoint. Therefore, by way of introduction to this symposium, I would like to discuss, albeit briefly, the many "hypotheses", essentially of a metaphysical nature, which are often used without being clearly stated. The first hypothesis is the idea that the Universe has some origin, or origins. Opposing this is the idea that the Universe is eternal, essentially without beginning, no matter how it might change-the old Platonic system, opposed by an Aristote?? lian view! Or Pope Pius XII or Abbe Lemaitre or Friedmann versus Einstein or Hoyle or Segal, etc. The second hypothesis is the need for a "minimum of hypotheses" -the sim?? plicity argument. One is expected to account for all the observations with a mini?? mum number of hypotheses or assumptions. In other words, the idea is to "save the phenomena", and this has been an imperative since the time of Plato and Aristotle. But numerous contradictions have arisen between the hypotheses and the facts. This has led some scientists to introduce additional entities, such as the cosmologi?? cal constant, dark matter, galaxy mergers, complicated geometries, and even a rest?? mass for the photon. Some of the proponents of the latter idea were Einstein, de Broglie, Findlay-Freundlich, and later Vigier and myself

TitleLow Reynolds number hydrodynamics : with special applications to particulate media
Author(s)Happel, J;Brenner, H
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1983.
DescriptionXII, 553 p : online resource
Abstract NoteOne studying the motion of fluids relative to particulate systems is soon impressed by the dichotomy which exists between books covering theoretical and practical aspects. Classical hydrodynamics is largely concerned with perfect fluids which unfortunately exert no forces on the particles past which they move. Practical approaches to subjects like fluidization, sedimentation, and flow through porous media abound in much useful but uncorrelated empirical information. The present book represents an attempt to bridge this gap by providing at least the beginnings of a rational approach to fluid?? particle dynamics, based on first principles. From the pedagogic viewpoint it seems worthwhile to show that the Navier-Stokes equations, which form the basis of all systematic texts, can be employed for useful practical applications beyond the elementary problems of laminar flow in pipes and Stokes law for the motion of a single particle. Although a suspension may often be viewed as a continuum for practical purposes, it really consists of a discrete collection of particles immersed in an essentially continuous fluid. Consideration of the actual detailed boundary?? value problems posed by this viewpoint may serve to call attention to the limitation of idealizations which apply to the overall transport properties of a mixture of fluid and solid particles
