TitleSolitons in Liquid Crystals
Author(s)Lam, Lui;Prost, Jacques
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1992.
DescriptionXIV, 338 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSolitons are a well-known and intriguing aspect of nonlinear behavior in a continuous system such as a fluid: a wave propagates through the medium without distortion. Liquid crystals are highly ordered systems without a rigid, long-range structure. Solitons in liquid crystals (sometimes referred to as "walls") have a wide variety of remarkable properties that are becoming important for practical applications such as electroluminescent display. This book, the first review of the subject to be published, contains not only surveys of the existing literature, but presents new results as well

TitleFormation and Interactions of Topological Defects : Proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute on Formation and Interactions of Topological Defects, held August 22???September 2, 1994, in Cambridge, England
Author(s)Davis, Anne-Christine;Brandenberger, Robert
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1995.
DescriptionVIII, 397 p : online resource
Abstract NoteTopological defects have recently become of great interest in condensed matter physics, particle physics and cosmology. They are the unavoidable remnants of many symmetry breaking phase transitions. Topological defects can play an important role in describing the properties of many condensed matter systems (e.g. superfluids and superconduc?? tors); they can catalyze many unusual effects in particle physics models and they may be responsible for seeding the density perturbations in the early Universe which de?? velop into galaxies and the large-scale structure of the Universe. Topological defects are also of great interest in mathematics as nontrivial solutions of nonlinear differential equations stabilized by topological effects. The purpose of the Advanced Study Institute "Formation and Interactions of Topo?? logical Defects" was to bring together students and practitioners in condensed matter physics, particle physics and cosmology, to give a detailed exposition of the role of topo?? logical defects in these fields; to explore similarities and differences in the approaches; and to provide a common basis for discussion and future collaborative research on common problems

TitleStudies in Turbulence
Author(s)Gatski, Thomas B;Sarkar, Sutanu;Speziale, Charles G
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1992.
DescriptionXVII, 602 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book contains contributions by former students, colleagues and friends of Professor John L. Lumley, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, in recognition of his enormous impact on the advancement of turbulence research. A variety of experimental, computational and theoretical topics, including turbulence modeling, direct numerical simulations, compressible turbulence, turbulent shear flows, coherent structures and the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition are contained herein. The diversity and scope of these contributions are further acknowledgment of John Lumley's wide ranging influence in the field of turbulence. The large number of contributions by the authors, many of whom were participants in The Lumley Symposium: Recent Developments in Turbulence (held at ICASE, NASA Langley Research Center on November 12 & 13, 1990), has presented us with the unique opportu?? nity to select a few numerical and theoretical papers for inclusion in the journal Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics for which Professor Lumley serves as Editor. Extended Abstracts of these pa?? pers are included in this volume and are appropriately marked. The special issue of TCFD will appear this year and will serve as an additional tribute to John Lumley. As is usually the case, the efforts of others have significantly eased our tasks. We would like to express our deep appreciation to Drs. R

TitleGeometry of Quantum Theory : Second Edition
Author(s)Varadarajan, V.S
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1968.
DescriptionXVIII, 412 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAvailable for the first time in soft cover, this book is a classic on the foundations of quantum theory. It examines the subject from a point of view that goes back to Heisenberg and Dirac, and whose definitive mathematical formulation is due to von Neumann. This view, which is essentially geometric and relies on the concept of symmetry, leads most naturally to the fundamental questions that are the basis of all attempts to understand the world of atomic and subatomic particles. The mathematical treatment of symmetry in quantum theory is based on the theory of group representations, and this book includes a self-contained treatment of the parts of this theory that are most useful in quantum physics

TitleSolar Magnetic Fields : Polarized Radiation Diagnostics
Author(s)Stenflo, Jan Olof
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994.
DescriptionXV, 385 p : online resource
Abstract NoteMagnetic fields are responsible for much of the variability and structuring in the universe, but only on the Sun can the basic magnetic field related processes be explored in detail. While several excellent textbooks have established a diagnostic foundation for exploring the physics of unmagnetized stellar atmospheres through spectral analysis, no corresponding treatise for magnetized stellar atmospheres has been available. The present monograph fills this gap. The theoretical foundation for the diagnostics of stellar magnetism is developed from first principles in a comprehensive way, both within the frameworks of classical physics and quantum field theory, together with a presentation of the various solar applications. This textbook can serve as an introduction to solar and stellar magnetism for astronomers and physicists at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level and will also become a resource book for more senior scientists with a general interest in cosmic magnetic fields

TitleClassical Mathematical Physics : Dynamical Systems and Field Theories
Author(s)Thirring, Walter
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1997.
DescriptionXXVIII, 543 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume combines the enlarged and corrected editions of both volumes on classical physics of Thirring's famous course in mathematical physics. With numerous examples and remarks accompanying the text, it is suitable as a textbook for students in physics, mathematics, and applied mathematics. The treatment of classical dynamical systems uses analysis on manifolds to provide the mathematical setting for discussions of Hamiltonian systems, canonical transformations, constants of motion, and pertubation theory. Problems discussed in considerable detail include: nonrelativistic motion of particles and systems, relativistic motion in electromagnetic and gravitational fields, and the structure of black holes. The treatment of classical fields uses the language of differenial geometry throughout, treating both Maxwell's and Einstein's equations in a compact and clear fashion. The book includes discussions of the electromagnetic field due to known charge distributions and in the presence of conductors as well as a new section on gauge theories. It discusses the solutions of the Einstein equations for maximally symmetric spaces and spaces with maximally symmetric submanifolds; it concludes by applying these results to the life and death of stars
