TitleThermal Design and Thermal Behaviour of Radio Telescopes and their Enclosures
Author(s)Greve, Albert;Bremer, Michael
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010.
DescriptionX, 420 p. 249 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteRadio telescopes as well as communication antennas operate under the influence of gravity, temperature and wind. Among those, temperature influences may degrade the performance of a radio telescope through transient changes of the focus, pointing, path length and sensitivity, often in an unpredictable way. Thermal Design and Thermal Behaviour of Radio Telescopes and their Enclosures reviews the design and construction principles of radio telescopes in view of thermal aspects and heat transfer with the variable thermal environment; it explains supporting thermal model calculations and the application and efficiency of thermal protection and temperature control; it presents many measurements illustrating the thermal behaviour of telescopes in the environment of their observatory sites. The book benefits scientists and radio/communication engineers, telescope designers and construction firms as well as telescope operators, observatory staff, but also the observing astronomer who is directly confronted with the thermal behaviour of a telescope

TitleA Scenario for Interstellar Exploration and Its Financing
Author(s)Bignami, Giovanni F;Sommariva, Andrea
PublicationMilano, Springer Milan, 2013.
DescriptionVIII, 101 p. 32 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book develops a credible scenario for interstellar exploration and colonization. In so doing, it examines: ??? the present situation and prospects for interstellar exploration technologies; ??? where to go: the search for habitable planets; ??? the motivations for space travel and colonization; ??? the financial mechanisms required to fund such enterprises. The final section of the book analyzes the uncertainties surrounding the presented scenario. The purpose of building a scenario is not only to pinpoint future events but also to highlight the uncertainties that may propel the future in different directions. Interstellar travel and colonization requires a civilization in which human beings see themselves as inhabitants of a single planet and in which global governance of these processes is conducted on a cooperative basis. The key question is, then, whether our present civilization is ready for such an endeavor, reflecting the fact that the critical uncertainties are political and cultural in nature. It is written in such a way as to allow the non-professional reader to become part of the debate on the future of space programs

TitleRacing the Moon???s Shadow with Concorde 001
Author(s)L??na, Pierre
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXV, 103 p. 55 illus., 44 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the unique story of?? observing a total solar exlipse for no less than 74 consecutive minutes. On the summer morning of June 30, 1973, the Sun rises on the Canary Islands. But it is strangely indented by the Moon. The eclipse of the century has just begun. From the west, the lunar shadow rushes to the African coast at a velocity of over 2000 kilometers per hour. Astronomers on the ground will enjoy seven short minutes of total eclipse to study the solar corona - too short for Pierre Lena and seven scientists who board the Concorde 001 prototype, an extraordinary plane to become the first commercial supersonic aircraft. With Andr?? Turcat as chief pilot and a crew of five, at 17000 m altitude, the aircraft remains in the lunar shadow for 74 minutes, a record time of scientific observations not yet??beaten and allowing for exceptional measurements. Science, technology, aviation and history combine in the story of a unique human adventure aboard a legendary aircraft, illustrated with a rich and original iconography. It reflects the wonderful domains that science and technology can open, and the passion in the professions they offer. A must read for every eclipse chaser and fan of true scientific adventures

TitleOptical Properties of Advanced Materials
Author(s)Aoyagi, Yoshinobu;Kajikawa, Kotaro
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013.
DescriptionXI, 191 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn the last decade, optically functionalized materials have developed rapidly, from bulk matters to structured forms. Now we have a rich variety of attractive advanced materials. They are applied to optical and electrical devices that support the information communication technology in the mid 21-th century. Accordingly, it is quite important to have a broad knowledge of the optical properties of advanced materials for students, scientists and engineers working in optics and related fields. This book is designed to teach fundamental optical properties of such advanced materials effectively. These materials have their own peculiarities which are very interesting in modern optical physics and also for applications because the concepts of optical properties are quite different from those in conventional optical materials. Hence each chapter starts to review the basic concepts of the materials briefly and proceeds to the practical use. The important topics covered in this book include: ??quantum structures of semiconductors, spintronics, ??photonic crystals, surface plasmons in metallic nanostructures, photonic metamaterials, liquid crystal materials, organic LED materials and magnet-optics.??

TitleCompendium of Quantum Physics : Concepts, Experiments, History and Philosophy
Author(s)Greenberger, Daniel;Hentschel, Klaus;Weinert, Friedel
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2009.
DescriptionXVI, 901 p : online resource
Abstract NoteWith contributions by many of today's leading quantum physicists, philosophers and historians, including three Nobel laureates, this comprehensive A to Z of quantum physics provides a lucid understanding of the key concepts of quantum theory and experiment. It covers technical and interpretational aspects alike, and includes both traditional topics and newer areas such as quantum information and its relatives. The central concepts that have shaped contemporary understanding of the quantum world are clearly defined, with illustrations where helpful, and discussed at a level suitable for undergraduate and graduate students of physics, history of science, and philosophy of physics. All articles share three main aims: (1) to provide a clear definition and understanding of the term concerned; (2) where possible, to trace the historical origins of the concept; and (3) to provide a small but optimal selection of references to the most relevant literature, including pertinent historical studies. Also discussed are the often contentious philosophical implications derived from quantum theory and its associated experimental findings. This compendium will be an indispensable resource for all those seeking concise up-to-date information about the many facets of quantum physics

TitleLa fine dei cieli di cristallo : L???astronomia al bivio del ???600
Author(s)Buonanno, Roberto
PublicationMilano, Springer Milan, 2010.
DescriptionXII, 228 pagg : online resource

TitleNew Paths Towards Quantum Gravity
Author(s)Boo??-Bavnbek, Bernhelm;Esposito, Giampiero;Lesch, Matthias
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010.
DescriptionXII, 350 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAside from the obvious statement that it should be a theory capable of unifying general relativity and quantum field theory, not much is known about the true nature of quantum gravity. New ideas - and there are many of them for this is an exciting field of research - often diverge to a degree where it seems impossible to decide in which of the many possible direction(s) the ongoing developments should be further sustained. The division of the book in two (overlapping) parts reflects the duality between the physical vision and the mathematical construction. The former is represented by tutorial reviews on non-commutative geometry, on space-time discretization and renormalization and on gauge field path integrals. The latter one by lectures on cohomology, on stochastic geometry and on mathematical tools for the effective action in quantum gravity. The book will benefit everyone working or entering the field of quantum gravity research

TitleGeneralized Phase Contrast : Applications in Optics and Photonics
Author(s)Gl??ckstad, Jesper;Palima, Darwin
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2009.
DescriptionXII, 315 p : online resource
Abstract NoteGeneralized Phase Contrast elevates the phase contrast technique not only to improve phase imaging but also to cross over and interface with diverse and seemingly disparate fields of contemporary optics and photonics. This book presents a comprehensive introduction to the Generalized Phase Contrast (GPC) method including an overview of the range of current and potential applications of GPC in wavefront sensing and phase imaging, structured laser illumination and image projection, optical trapping and manipulation, and optical encryption and decryption. The GPC method goes further than the restrictive assumptions of conventional Zernike phase contrast analysis and achieves an expanded range of validity beyond weak phase perturbations. The generalized analysis yields design criteria for tuning experimental parameters to achieve optimal performance in terms of accuracy, fidelity and light efficiency. Optimization can address practical issues, such as finding an optimal spatial filter for the chosen application, and can even enable a Reverse Phase Contrast mode where intensity patterns are converted into a phase modulation. Audience Researchers and graduate students in optical sciences, particularly those interested in the novel applications of optical sensing and modulation techniques in contemporary optics and photonics
